Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) is a framework that helps educators provide academic and behavioral strategies for students with various needs. Instead of the “waiting for failure” assessment model of pre-IDEA days, MTSS takes a proactive approach to identifying students with academic or behavioral needs. Early assessment and intervention for these students can help them catch up with their peers sooner and close the gap. The key components of MTSS include:
Universal screening of all students early in the school year
Tiers of interventions that can be amplified in response to levels of need
Ongoing data collection and continual assessment
Schoolwide approach to expectations and supports
Parent involvement
The integrated instruction model of MTSS uses collected data to assess student needs and provide them with interventions in appropriate tiers.
School counselors are key to the successful implementation of MTSS (ASCA, 2018). They collaborate with stakeholders to plan, implement, evaluate, and improve school counseling supports at the Tier 1 (universal), Tier 2 (supplemental), and Tier 3 (intensified) levels.
We, as the school counselors, will reach out to parents/guardians to schedule a team meeting to review a student's acaemic and behaviorial progress. This allows the team to pull together and discuss the most current data to make informed decisions on behalf of the student.
Daily Report Cards are data driven and provide concrete expectations for students. The DRC's utilized at Bowman are modified and edited from both Cincinnati Children's Center for ADHD and also many collaborations with teachers/staff.
