Are you interested in working with large or small animals? Do you come from a farm and want to learn more about animal care? If so, this concentration is for you! Students concentrating in animal science often further their education at UConn, Purdue, and SUNY Cobleskill in New York.
Veterinary Science I
Students will learn terminology and study disease prevention and treatment for large animals, as well as anatomy and physiology as it relates to them.
Veterinary Science II
Prerequisite: Vet Science I Continuing from Veterinary Science I, students will deepen their knowledge of terminology and disease prevention and treatment for large animals.
Veterinary Technology I
This course covers the anatomy and physiology of various species of small animals. Students will learn medical vocabulary and terminology relevant to veterinary science, along with disease prevention and treatment.
Veterinary Technology II
Prerequisite: Vet Tech I
Students will focus on lab animal care, safety, and research, learning to apply restraint, vaccinations, and surgical procedures.
Food and Meat Science
Students will explore meat processing, cuts of meat, and proper storage and handling. This course also includes units in Food Science and Poultry Science, covering the growth and processing of poultry and food.
Large Animal Science
Students will learn about the management of beef, sheep, and hogs, including housing, nutrition, terminology, reproduction, and management practices.
Equine Science
Prerequisite: Animal Systems and Dairy Products
This course covers breeds, handling, care, equipment, diseases, reproduction, nutrition, and the various uses of horses.
Animal Systems and Dairy Products
Students will learn about nutrition, reproduction, animal health, and dairy products, including hands-on experience with milking cows, making ice cream, and identifying different cheeses.
Dairy Production
Prerequisite: Animal Systems and Dairy Products
Students will gain knowledge about breeds, housing, care, equipment, diseases, reproduction, nutrition, terminology, and overall management of dairy production.
