KLO Students Harvesting
Seeds are planted into Rockwool cubes that are specially designed for hydroponic growing. These seeds stay in an environmentally regulated seedling area for two weeks.
After two weeks, the hardiest of the seedlings are transplanted into the main growing area where they will continue to grow for 4 more weeks. In this area the lights are on for 18 hours a day and off for 6 and nutriend concentrations of nitrogen, calcium and pH are all mainitained with computer programming.
After another 4 weeks, the leafy green vegetables are havested. We harvest approximately 300 heads of lettuce per week.
Who manages the farm?
KLO students who join Farm Club are responsible for the operation of the farm and the cultivation of the plants it grows. Farm Club is open to all grade 8 & 9 students starting in September of the school year and grade 7 students in January. This club is facilitated by Mme Lockwood.

How does the farm work?
The Modular Farm is a fully automated hydroponic farm where optimal growing levels are maintained through programming, sensors, and automatic pumps. 1500 L of water enriched with synthetic nutrients are circulated through trays where the plants' roots are submerged. Temperature and humidity levels are monitored and adjusted to stay within the specific plants growing range and the lights are the specific spectrum for leafy green vegetables such as lettuce and basil.
