Nursery Rhymes and Fables
This domain will introduce students to classic nursery rhymes and fables that have been favorites with children for generations. Students will learn rhymes such as "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star," "Humpty, Dumpty", and Hickory, Dickory, Dock," as well as characters like Little Miss Muffet and Little Boy Blue. Mother Goose and other traditional poems help students learn vocabulary and build phonemic awareness. By listening carefully to nursery rhymes and repeating or reciting them by heart, students develop an awareness of language that will help them become better readers and writers. Because nursery rhymes are fun to learn and involve everyday activities young learners can relate to them.
Three important Fables will be introduced to students during this domain. Fables are stories which teach important lessons. We will be reading The Lion and the Mouse, The Dog and His Reflection and The Hare and the Tortoise. These stories are wonderful for exposing students to story elements such as the setting, characters, problems and solutions. They are also wonderful for engaging students in meaningful conversations about lessons learned, character traits and forming an opinion.
