Plants just like animals respond to stimulus in their environment. Think about the needs of a plant and the changes in a plant's surroundings that would require it to respond. The plant needs to be able to carry out photosynthesis and therefore requires water, carbon dioxide and light. Plants grow toward the light. THis growth movement is a response of the plant o the stimulus of light
Have you ever noticed that a plant sometimes adjusts itself towards the light? Why is this?
Are plant responses in which the plant grows towards or away from a stimulus.
Read “Investigations of Phototropism” and “The Mechanism of Gravitropism” on pages 326 and 327 of the textbook. Study Figures C3.25 and C3.26 closely.
a. Which scientists studied phototropism and what questions did they ask?
b. Describe how each of the scientists investigated their question and what they concluded from their investigations.
2. What name has been given to and what class of substance is the chemical responsible for the stimulus for phototropism?
Read “The Mechanisms of Gravitropism” on page 327. Answer the following question.
3.. Describe what scientists believe is the mechanism of gravitropism and how it works.
Turn to page 328 of the textbook and read the information in “Other Control Mechanisms.” Answer the following questions.
4. What are four response mechanisms other than phototropism and gravitropism that plants
respond to?
5. How do flowering plants respond to the length of darkness?
Once you feel prepared after reviewing the course material for sections C3.1- C3.5, you are ready for test permission for C3 Unit Test
For Test permission- you must bring the following to a Science teacher:
