De-Anne Weekes, DRSD Founder and Creative Director
Born in the pulsating heart of Trinidad and deeply rooted in the soulful traditions of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, De-Ann Weekes embodies a dance legacy as vibrant and dynamic as the islands. Her journey began in 2003 when she arrived in Calgary, swiftly transforming its dance scene with her electrifying presence. Driven by a relentless pursuit of artistic mastery, De-Ann ventured to Toronto to immerse herself in the world of Ballet Creole, where Afro Jazz, West African, and Afro-Caribbean rhythms flowed through her veins. She refined her craft, turning her body into a vessel of pure expression.
Returning to Alberta, De-Ann brought with her a wealth of knowledge and an uncontainable passion for dance. She trained dancers with the power of Dunham, Graham's grace, and Horton's precision, leaving an indelible mark on every stage she touched. Her influence extended far beyond Alberta, leading workshops across the nation and back to the Caribbean, where she reignited the deep cultural connections to the Afro-Caribbean movement.
Her talent was recognized on a global stage when she earned a prestigious scholarship to the world-renowned Jacob’s Pillow. There, she became a vital part of the Dunham Revisited Intensive, continually pushing the boundaries of her artistry. Every step De-Ann takes is a tribute to the rich heritage of Afro-Caribbean dance. Her passion is contagious, her artistry transcendent, and her mission clear: to keep the vibrant spirit of this beautiful art form alive, inspiring generations to come
