Introduction to Engineering Design (IED) is a high school level foundation course in the Project Lead the Way (PLTW) Engineering Program. In IED, students are introduced to the engineering profession and a common approach to the solution of engineering problems, an engineering design process. Utilizing Activity Project Based (APB) teaching and learning pedagogy, students will progress from completing structured activities to solving open-ended projects and problems that require them to develop planning, documentation, communication, and other professional skills.
Unit 1 The Design Process
Unit 2 Technical Sketching and Drawing
Unit 3 Modeling and Measurements
Unit 4 Modeling Skills and Puzzle Cube Analysis
Unit 5 Geometry of Design
Unit 6 Reverse Engineering
Unit 7 Documentation
Unit 8 Advanced Computer Modeling
Unit 9 Design Team
Unit 10 Design Challenges
Please refer to the LISD High School Grading Systems Guidelines for all of the governing details for grading in IED.
Our engineering work will fall under the following categories:
Weightings for each cycle are as follows:
Assignments and Quizzes* 25-50%*
Engineering Notebook 25 %
Projects and Exams 25-50% (projects later in the year)
* Participation/Team will be a subset of this category
NOTE: Each cycle these weightings may change based on the unit of study. Note each cycle category percentage in Home Access Center each cycle.
Make sure you sign up for Remind notices! Most communication will be in Google Classroom and via email, but we will use Remind 101 texts for quick communications and important reminders! Additionally, this is a great way for us to check in with each other directly.
We talk regularly in class about open, honest communication and advocating for yourself. Talk with me about where you are on assignments- "If you don't ask, you won't know the possibilities, and if you don't know, you won't succeed".
If you are absent, it is up to you to get your assignment and any notes, warm-ups, etc. that you missed within a day. Most of our classwork is included in Google Classroom, but some of our work is completed in our Engineering Notebooks. I highly recommend you establish a "Homework Buddy" from your class to help stay on top of any missed work.
Late work will be assigned a point deduction of 10 points per school day (not class day), so please make sure you communicate with me often on your progress and needs.
Intro to Engineering Design is a "professional" elective. I expect students to advocate for themselves. This is an important life skill and it starts here in the classroom. PLEASE talk to me about your situation. You never know until you ask! There are so many different ways to solve a problem, and I've found through the years, there's always a solution of some sort!
