Unit of Study 4: Integrating Performing Arts

This comprehensive unit blends music, movement, storytelling, and visual arts to engage first-grade students in foundational performing arts skills. Students begin by exploring musical forms and part work through rhythmic patterns, vocal expression, and movement, developing listening and collaboration skills. They then deepen sensory awareness and storytelling through embodiment of the five senses with Poky Little Puppy, integrating dramatization and song. The unit continues with an introduction to the orchestra via Peter and the Wolf, where students connect characters to instruments and practice silent acting to strengthen narrative understanding. Building on this, students create expressive masks representing characters from Peter and the Wolf, using art to explore character traits and emotions while linking visual expression to dramatic performance. Throughout, lessons emphasize audience etiquette, creativity, and teamwork, aligned with Texas TEKS for music, theatre, art, and language arts, fostering confident, empathetic young performers who appreciate the power of music and story in diverse forms.
