Leander ISD aims to provide access to math instruction at a level and pace to meet the learning needs of our students. To achieve this goal, we have developed math challenge opportunities in elementary that lead to Math Pathways beginning in 5th grade and continuing through high school. All students will be offered challenge and support to develop strong foundations that lead to the pathways that best fit their long-term academic goals. The Math Pathways Placement Guidance document show the progression of courses and any testing that may be available to enter a pathway. Learn more about Math Pathways in our Math Pathways Information Webinar.
*Math Pathway 3 Placement Process:
Students enrolled in the math 5/6 course and who are on track to successfully complete the course have the option to request and access a math placement test. This placement test will allow the district to determine if placement in pathway 3 is appropriate for the learner. Prior to registering for the placement test, parents should consider math outcomes and math performance with their learner’s math teacher. Review the Pathway 3 Math Placement Testing Information and FAQ document to learn more about the exam and placement in pathway 3.
Parents of students currently in the math 5/6 course who desire possible placement in pathway 3 can register for testing using the 2026 Math Pathway 3 Placement Exam Registration Form. Note – this form will not open until October 1 and it will close January 9, 2026. Any student not registered by this date will not be able to test. This deadline is firm. The exam will be given in a secure testing environment to students registered by the Friday, January 9, 2026 end of school day deadline. Testing will take place on the learner’s campus in our district testing window of January 28 – February 18, 2026. Campuses will be able to communicate the exact testing date for your learner.
Students who earn a score at or above 80 percent on the placement exam combined with a review of their math data by the campus placement team, may be placed in Math 7/8 in 6th grade. This placement will allow students to take Algebra I in 7th grade, and Geometry in 8th grade. Note, both Algebra I and Geometry are high school credit courses that will be placed on the transcript. Think through the acceleration process by backwards mapping the math course progression from 12th grade back to 5th grade. We expect all students to take four years of high school math regardless of early acceleration. Watch this webinar if you have additional questions.
