Boozoo! My name is Lisa Ann Phillips-Hernandez and I am the Music Educator and Music Director at Lac du Flambeau Public School. I've been working at LdF for 25 years and have enjoyed every minute! I graduated from the University of South Dakota in 1987 with a Bachelor's Degree in Music Education & Vocal and Instrumental Performance. I'm certified in General Music Education, Vocal Music and Instrumental Music. Voice was my major and Saxophone was my minor. I received my Master in Education from Silver Lake College in 1997 and I have taken extensive continuing Education Classes, to further my own Education.
I have loved music since an early age. My first memory of singing was when my kindergarten teacher Miss Locker asked if anyone knew any songs to sing. I raised my hand, stood up and sang the Marine Corps Hymn ( because my father is a Marine). Years later when I saw Miss Locker she told me I was one of her favorite memories, teaching Kindergarten. When I chose to be in Band in the 5th grade, my Dad sent me up to my room to figure out my Saxophone (without knowing the fingerings or having a lesson)...and you guessed it...I taught myself to play the Marine Corps Hymn. I have to say it was not perfect...but it was good enough for my Dad. I have played my Horn ever since. All through High School, to College Jazz Band and Marching Band and now playing with the Community Band at the Campanile Center for the Performing Arts and The Unemployed 11 Jazz Band. I don't neglect my Vocal training in the least. I sing and Direct (when required), with the Superior Diocesan Chorale. I also sing with the Community Choir when I have the time. I am Church Cantor and Choir Director, Sing in Festival Aurora Borealis Festival in the Summer and I have recorded backup vocals for Mouse in the House Productions in Los Angeles. I've sung and Directed all over the world. Most recently I Directed the Diocesan Chorale of Superior, on their tour of Vienna, Salzburg, Munich and Prague.
My personal mission as a teacher is to remember the importance of being connected and establishing relationships with students, parents, elders, and leaders in our community. It is also important to participate in community activities and be present and aware of happenings in the community where I teach. I teach the way I was taught. I had wonderful role-models from my great-grandmother to my parents, to my own teachers, to my friends, and to many of the Elders in the Lac du Flambeau community.
I love music and I love to laugh and have fun. Most of the children I teach understand that. My students also know that I have high expectations of them. I love children and I love teaching and working with students. I want them to soar and be better than my generation. My wish is that they exceed my expectations.
In addition to my Music Teaching duties I am part of the Cultural Connections Team, I teach Sewing and Outfit making and I run Open Gym on Friday nights during the School Year from 3:15-6:00pm, for 4th-8th grade students.
