Hello Mathzilla Cubers!
We are so excited to see you compete in our Mathzilla 10.0 Rubik's Cube Competition after our Round 2 Problem Solving Portion and our pizza dinner. Parents, please come back by 6:00pm to watch. Aim to arrive around 5:45 so you’re settled in your seat by 6:00pm.
Here are the details:
The competition will be Speed Solving a standard 3x3 Rubik’s Cube puzzle. We will provide the cubes. We are using YL GuanLong speed cubes for the competition. All cubes will be scrambled according to Article 4 of the World Cubing Association (or WCA) rules. YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO KEEP THE CUBES AFTER YOU ATTEMPT TO SOLVE.
We will call up registered contestants by grade level and do three preliminary rounds (one per grade- 4th, 5th, 6th) followed by a championship round to determine our speed solver champion. Once we’ve selected the top three solvers in each grade, we will have a final championship round to select the top 3 solvers in the contest. We will hand out awards immediately after. Prizes will be given to all contestants in the final championship round.
Contestants in each round will be asked to sit down at one of the tables at the front of the MPR. In front of you will be a pre-scrambled 3x3x3 speed cube covered by a plastic cup. DO NOT REMOVE THE CUP UNTIL YOU ARE TOLD TO DO SO!!!
Each round will consist of the following phases:
1. Inspection Phase – Each contestant will have 15 seconds to inspect their cube. During the inspection phase, you are allowed to pick up and inspect your cube, but you cannot apply any solves. That means you can’t turn any faces!!! When you are done inspecting your cube, place the cube down in front of you on the table in any orientation you wish, and place both of your hands palms down on the table. YOU MAY NOT TOUCH ANY PART OF THE CUBE BEFORE THE SOLVE BEGINS!
2. Solve Phase: All contestants in a round will be timed on the same clock. Each contest will last a maximum of five minutes. YOU MAY NOT FLIP CORNERS OR DISASSEMBLE YOUR CUBE DURING THE SOLVE! Solve the cube as fast as you can using both hands. When you have completed your solve, place or drop your cube down on the table and stand up from your chair. A judge will come to your seat, inspect your cube to make sure you solved your cube, and note the finish time of your solve. Once three people have finished their cubes, the solve phase will end and we will move onto the next round.
If you have any questions, please let me know.
Best,
Mrs. Banta
