Dear 4th Graders,
Our school year is coming to a close and Ms. Stallings and Mrs. Ratcliff want to wish you all a happy, peaceful, and fun summer! This year we have come together as classmates and friends, we sang, danced, played, created and shared joy with one another. Music is a wonderful tool to bring people together. We are sorry this year ended so quickly but we look forward to seeing you next year. Remember to always sing, dance, and love one another always! We love you all!
Sincerely,
Ms. Stallings and Mrs. Ratcliff

Hello 4th Grade,
Today we will warm up with the Purple Belt of Solfege Dojo, then we will be continuing with our conducting lesson from Tuesday. Keep working through the slideshow and learn how to conduct in 2 time. We will also start getting fancy and learn how to add Expression. Expression means the conductor controls the Dynamics (Loud/Soft), Tempo (Fast/Slow), and Articulations (Smooth/Choppy).
Good Morning 4th Grade,
Today we will learn how to conduct in both 4/4 and 3/4 time. Follow the slide show to learn all about conducting.
Good Morning 4th Grade!
Today we are going to continue our Star Wars lesson from Tuesday.
First, we will warm up with the May song and then Ms. Stallings is going to play the Star Wars Theme we finished in Google Chrome Music Maker on Tuesday. She is playing it on the oboe with piano accompaniment. If you missed our lesson on Tuesday, don't worry, we have linked it below.
Next, please watch the Star Wars Medley and answer the questions below.
After the Star Wars Medley activity, check out the Google Slides to learn how to play the Star Wars Theme on xylophone with Mrs. Ratcliff. We have included a xylophone practice pad next to the slides. You can "play" by using your mouse (desktop only) or following along with two index fingers on the screen.
If you missed our Tuesday lesson, we have linked the *Unfinished* Star Wars Melody Activity below. Try your best to complete the melody by ear and using context clues. Although majority of you are familiar with this melody, some may not be. Don't worry if you aren't, just try your best to fill it in. Check with the answer key below at the end.
Ms. Stallings plays the oboe. The oboe is a double reed instrument. She has been playing the oboe for 7 years.
We have spent a lot of time building Star Wars Legos! Yoshi is wearing his Yoda sweater.
What was the main difference between today's video and Tuesday's video?
Do you hear any instruments?
What was your favorite melody in this version?
Click on the Google Chrome Melody Maker above. The Star Wars Theme is unfinished! We want you to listen to the beginning and try to complete the melody by listening and using context clues. First listen to what is given, and then figure out what is missing. When finished, press the play button and listen to the completed melody. I have posted the answer key below for AFTER trying to complete it by ear.
Feel free to share your link to our Padlet on the home page! We would love to see your creations!
After trying to complete the melody by ear, check with this key.
Good Morning 4th Grade!
Yesterday was May 4th, May the Fourth be With You, and in celebration we have Star Wars themed activities planned today!
First, please watch the Cello Wars video and answer the questions below.
After the Cello Wars activity, we have created an *Unfinished* Star Wars Melody in Google Chrome Melody Maker. Try your best to complete the melody by ear and using context clues. Although majority of you are familiar with this melody, some may not be. Don't worry if you aren't and try your best to fill it in. Check with the answer key below at the end.
Finally, we want to review our concept of syncopated rhythms that we learned last week. Last week we learned the song "Alabama Gal" using "ti ta ti". In this fun activity, syncopated rhythms will fly across the screen (like the opening/closing scenes of Star Wars!). There are 5 syncopated rhythms total. There will be 4 clicks to give you the steady beat and "count you in" prior to speaking the rhythm. We will see eight notes, quarter notes, and sixteenth notes in this challenge. A reminder: Quarter Note = Ta, Eight Note = Ti, and Sixteenth Notes = takadimi
How was the music different and change throughout the video? (think loud/soft, piano/forte and slow/fast, largo/presto)
What emotions did you feel during the transition between melodies?
What other instruments do you hear? Do you hear voices?
What was your favorite melody?

Directions:
The rhythms will float up the screen.
There will be 4 clicks to give you the steady beat and "count you in" before counting the rhythm on your own. Don't forget if you see a set of 4 16th notes to speak it as takadimi.
Here are the rhythms to check after you finish the video:
ti ta ti ta ta
ti ta ti titi ta
ti ta ti takadimi titi
ti ta ti takadimi ta
ta ti ta ti ta
Good Morning 4th Grade,
Today we are going to continue our lesson on syncopation. Syncopation is a way composers change rhythms to make the music feel off-beat. We are going to learn the melody to "Alabama Gal" by focusing on the melody with solfege.
We will begin today's lesson with warming up our voices with the Green Belt on Solfege Dojo. Are you able to sing it without my help? Give it a try - and skip to the end of the video to check for the right melody!
Part 2 of our lesson on Syncopation.
Good Morning 4th Grade,
This week we are going to learn a new musical term, syncopation. Syncopation is a way composers change rhythms to make the music feel off-beat. We are going to learn the song "Alabama Gal". Today we will focus on learning the lyrics and rhythm of the piece, and Thursday we will introduce a new solfege note to learn the melody.
We will begin today's lesson with warming up our voices with the Green Belt on Solfege Dojo. (We have a special guest for this week's dojo!)
Part 1 of our lesson on Syncopation.
Hello 4th Graders!
Yesterday was Earth Day! It is so important that we take care of our planet by recycling, not littering, and just being aware of how our actions can impact our environments.
Today we will warm up with a fun music workout video done by Ms. Pack to get our bodies moving. Ms. Stallings and Ms. Pack studied together at George Mason University. Ms. Pack is currently the music teacher at Wuhan Yangtze International School in Wuhan, China.
Next we will continue to practice the Orange Belt of Solfege Dojo.
Finally, we will continue our lesson on Earth Day and complete a note name worksheet. When finished with the worksheet, feel free to upload it to our Padlet on the home page!
Directions: write the name of each note shown on the gardening spade onto the seed. Feel free to download and fill in electronically or print out and complete. Please upload to the Padlet on the homepage when finished.
Hello 4th Graders!
Tomorrow is Earth Day! It is so important that we take care of our planet by recycling, not littering, and just being aware of how our actions can impact our environments.
Today I want you to listen to the song "Big Yellow Taxi" by Joni Mitchell written in 1970. This song talks about things she observed happening around the world. Listen to the song, and answer the questions to the right of the video.
Why did they put the trees in a "tree museum"?
What was happening to Paradise?
What might happen to paradise in the future?
What does Joni Mitchell mean when she says "You don't know what you've got, 'till it's gone"?
How can you help keep our planet green?
Not far from us, in Washington D.C. is the National Arboretum. An arboretum is a garden specifically devoted to trees, where they are preserved and studied.
Once quarantine is over, your family could take a fun trip to see the National Arboretum.
*Fun Fact* The National Arboretum houses 22 Columns that once were a part of the United States Capital Building from 1828-1958.
Hello 4th Grade!
Today we will warm up with the Yellow Belt of Solfege Dojo again.
Let's also try our Bim Bum Body Percussion challenge again. Everything takes lots of practice to get it right. How did you do on the speed round?
Did you figure out the form or pattern? (I posted the answer at the bottom)
I have posted the music interview again, in case you didn't get a chance to do it last class. You can also interview someone new!!
*Post a video of the challenge on our Padlet on the Home Page!!
Solfege Dojo Instructions
Let's see if Mrs. Ratcliff can do the challenge!

Bim = Clap
Bum = Snap
Biddy = Alternate Patting Knees
Hello 4th Grade,
Today we will continue what we practiced on Tuesday. Today is a REVIEW day but we will add more to the Spring Canon.

These are the Trumpet, French Horn, Trombone, and Tuba.
**Also new to out music site, We have created a Padlet where you can share anything music you are working on! Go to the Home page to upload.
This would be a great place to show us your Karate Belts.
Why wont the rain stop?
I dislike the rain
The weather need to get much better today
So I can go out and play!
Try these poems with a family member as a round or try the partner rhythms with the two poems. Upload your videos to the Padlet on the home page!
*My camera ended my video a little early so the end is a bit abrupt.
Good Morning 4th Grade,
We have a quite a few things planned for today.
First, begin with the rhythm review video to the left. This video is an easy review and uses Quarter notes (Ta), eighth notes (Titi), half notes (Too), and Quarter Rests. The video may use different terms than we do at NLE.
Next, we will continue our warm-ups with solfege dojo. We have decided to bump you up to level 4. Level 4 Dojo uses the full pentatonic scale meaning 5 notes in the scale: Do, Re, Mi, So, La. Follow along in the video to the left.
After you have finished Solfege dojo. Click the next video to continue working on our Springtime poem round.
Finally, keep working through The Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra. Try to progress through all the String instruments. These are Violin, Viola, Cello, and String Bass.
Solfege Dojo Instructions
Hello 4th Graders!
Today we will warm up our voices and practice our solfege training. Next week, we'll start Solfege Dojo at home!
It's finally spring and we've had some warm days. Just because we are staying home and away from school, doesn't mean you can't get outside for some fresh air. Below are the words to the rhythm canon (or round) we will try to prepare virtually (See the video to the left for this activity)
Now Spring time is here.
Seems like we've been waiting for a year.
Now's the day that it's okay to run and play
'Cause Spring is really, spring is really here!
After you have done the above activity, log back into your Yong Person's Guide to the Orchestra account and play all the games in the Woodwind Family. These instruments are: Flute/Piccolo, Oboe, Clarinet, and Bassoon.
*Hint: In order to have your progress saved, you must listen to the introduction song for the next instrument and let the book pop up. Then you can exit out.
**Check out the Daily Music Challenge on the Home Page
Hello 4th Graders,
I hope you are enjoying some down time at home and you are finding new ways to be creative and musical. I know I have really missed all of you! So in celebration of St. Patrick's Day, I wanted to share a song that we at NLE sing every year for our 5th graders as they promote to middle school. This is a beautiful Irish text, talking about going away but looking forward to when we can all be together again. Click on the slideshow on the top left.
After you have listened to and sung along with the song, please click on The Young Person's guide to the Orchestra. We will be working through this program over the next few classes to learn all the instruments in a Symphony Orchestra.
You will need adobe flash to run this so it may not work on an ipad.
Click Register.
Create a username and password you will remember.
Start a new game
*Try to work through the introduction of all the instrument families and play the game to open the "Secret Garage"
Log out and save the rest for later.
