Characteristics of 4th Graders

Characteristics of Fourth Graders

You may notice your child exhibiting one or many of the following characteristics this year.

Your child’s potential:

Fourth graders exhibit a lot of anxiety. They worry: “Did I pass that test? Does this person like me?” They can separate fact from fantasy, but they tend to make mountains out of molehills.

At this age, children seek perfection. They don’t like creative activities as much as before because there are too many options. For example, they want a ruler, a pencil and instructions to make a square.

Peers are the guiding force now. You may notice your child seeking independence.

Academics:

Fourth grade is a pivotal point for independent academics. Your child no longer needs constant teacher guidance; he/she will be asked to complete more complex homework and class work assignments.

How can you help?

Help your child read maps. Pose real-life problems: What is the best route to Charlottesville?

When shopping, have your child read labels to determine ingredients; compare prices to different brands so you can stay within your budget.

Buy a toolbox and fill it with a few measuring instruments. Give him/her a project he/she can complete independently.

Keep communication lines open. Don’t allow him/her to hide behind the question “How was school?’ with the one-word retort: “Fine.” Follow up by saying “Tell me three things you learned at school.”
