MATH with Mrs. Curtis

This year in math, we will cover a wide array of topics (see curriculum list on previous page). Many times, dependent upon the student’s comprehension of a specific subject, homework may be tiered. This may mean that not everyone is completing the same work; some students may receive remedial homework that will help them better understand a concept while others may receive homework that approaches the concept in a more challenging way. Every student, regardless of prior academic performance, is encouraged to participate as long as interest and enthusiasm for problem solving are present. Students are also encouraged to use their math notebooks to help them with homework.

Students will continue to review and learn math facts. There are a variety of ways to help practice addition, subtraction, multiplication and division facts, including XtraMath. This online program is a quick way to practice math facts and to track mastery. Students will be shown how to access this program and can use it at home as well as school.

Students will also take timed math fact tests. This consistent practice and assessment will increase their accuracy and fluency. Practicing facts like this will help students as they move into the multiplication and division units.

In regards to upcoming tests and quizzes, I will typically give at least one week’s notice. To help prepare for the assessment, students should be completing the homework during the week, as well as reviewing the notes in the math notebook.
