Bullying Prevention and Education



Loudoun County Public Schools will implement a new county-wide bullying prevention program called Second Step. The second step program teaches students how to identify what bullying is as well as bullying behaviors and appropriate ways to handle bullying if it happens.

School Counselors at Lovettsville ES implement this program in Kindergarten - 5th grade through classroom lessons and activities.

What is "Bullying"???

“Bullying” means any aggressive and unwanted behavior that is intended to harm, intimidate, or humiliate the victim; involves a real or perceived power imbalance between the aggressor or aggressors and victim; and is repeated over time or causes severe emotional trauma. “Bullying” includes cyberbullying. “Bullying” does not include ordinary teasing, horseplay, argument, or peer conflict. (Code of Virginia § 22.1-276.01)


Bullying is behavior that is:

* Repeated

* Intentional

* Has an imbalance of power

Our Second Step Social-Emotional (SEL) Program teaches the foundational skills needed to resist bullying:

* Emotional Management

* Empathy

*Problem Solving Skills

* Friendship Building

* Assertiveness

The Second Step Bullying Prevention Lessons incorporates the verbiage from our SEL program and goes a step further to teach our students how to:

* Be safe and respectful

* Recognize Bullying

* Report Bullying

* Refuse Bullying

* Be a bystander who helps stop bullying
