Preserving our Lake County, California family histories since 1977!
Throughout the years, our volunteers have been asked to help people with their family history mysteries... Sometimes it is a request to find an obituary, or members of the family. Other times, the requests have been more challenging.
Whether these requests come to us directly, or through other venues, our researchers accept the challenge to help.
As part of our ongoing cooperation with the County of Lake, our volunteer staff have worked to fulfill the genealogical inquiries that come through the Library system. Because the Lakeport Library houses the microfilmed local newspapers, partially thanks to the Nostalgic News funds, it is the one of the first sources that we look into, if the answer isn't in our own collection. Another source at the County Library is a copy of Mauldin's Notes that we refer to.
The following are just a small sampling of some of the requests that our research volunteers have been able to answer partially or fully in order to give to back to the community and also to those who can not travel to Lake County to find the answers they seek.
"I would like to thank you for answering my e-mail message promptly; and please keep up the good work as we in other states benefit from your generosity." Tom C., McMinnville, Oregon
"My goodness, I didn’t expect you to go to such extraordinary lengths! Your kindness is sincerely appreciated! Wishing you success!!!! Thank you so much!!" Terri S.
"THANKS SO MUCH!! Really appreciated, Especially as it's all volunteer work . " S.H.
We have also helped a genealogical researcher working with an attorney on an estate matter: Heir Searches
We found Newspaper articles about fish caught (the gent's house had burnt and he'd lost the newspaper clipping) and another time about a motorcycle accident that the requester had been involved in.
Information was requested about about a resort having burnt, sometime in the 1980s...(found it, it was arson!)
A gentleman came in today trying to find the address of his family’s old summer cabin in _____. I think they last lived in it in ’45, and he’s been having difficulty finding the exact location. Found it!
Our volunteers helped with requests from the L.C. Theater Group, to research various local histories for their vignettes: Lore of the Lake,
from the local Rotary Club, research the history of the "Hooligan Bell", now installed in Xabatin Community Park, Lakeport.
