Frequently Asked Questions
Q: There's a Genealogical Society in Lake County? Tell me more!
A: Established in 1977 by a group of dedicated historians and genealogists, this Society has accumulated well over 1000 volumes of genealogy related materials over the past five decades. Learn more about the Society's history here and why you haven't heard much about us for a while.
Q: Who is Lenore Clark and why is your genealogy library named after her?
A: Lenore was the driving force behind the creation of the Lake County Genealogical Society, its Founder and of course, one of the Charter members. She was very giving of her time to the Genealogical Society, in addition to her support of other historical organizations. Her family was nurtured on a love of local history, especially her daughter Jan (Clark) Cook, also a charter member, whom we recently lost in 2023.

Q: What kinds of things do you have in your genealogy library? Do you have anything about my Great-grandparents?
A: There's a good chance that if your family lived in Lake County we have something in our collection about them. To better help us help you, gather what you know, like where and when they lived in Lake County. That will help narrow down the search. Make a list of what you want to know. If you want to know "Everything" we will help you learn where to find the information for yourself and how to organize what you learn. Then either come to a class or fill out a Research Request Form.
Q: Who are your Board of Directors?
A: Five volunteers consist of our Board, as elected by our members for a two year term. Click the link for an up-to-date list of our Board of Directors.
Q: What kind of things can I do to help?
A: Other than joining our Society or attending classes, there are many opportunities, such as being a Board Member or Member at Large, to spread the word about the Lake County Genealogical Society. You can volunteer to fulfill research requests. You can participate in the events that the Genealogical Society sponsors, like cemetery tours or booth sit at events like the Pear Festival. You can share our website with your friends and family, especially on social media.
Q: What if I am just a beginner at genealogy? How can I learn?
A: We hold monthly genealogy classes where both beginners and seasoned genealogists learn proper methodology and techniques to build family trees and break down brick walls that may arise during the process. Click here for the latest updates on our classes and special interest groups.
Q: What if I don't live in Lake County? How can you help me if I can't attend any classes?
A: Our Volunteers will work with you via email to establish what it is you want to learn about your Lake County people or places. Click here to go to the Research Request Form.
Q: How can I join the Genealogical Society?
A: Our dues are modest, only $10 for individuals and $15 for one household. Click here to go to our Membership Page
Q: How else can I help the Genealogical Society?
A: You can help my contributing to our Building Fundraising Campaign. Its a big project, to create a permanent home for our collection with an office, where we can meet with researchers in person or have our resources at our fingertips for those requests from out of the area. We are looking forward to making the down payment with help of donors like You!
