Differentiation
What does differentiation look like in adult Ed. and voc. training?
it's a Value
Video length: 0:53 ⏱️
Address the social, emotional, and learning needs of diverse learners by considering differentiation as a value (just as we do kindness, respect, or empathy); doing so ensures that we use it everyday and it becomes integral to our teaching practice and daily lives.
removing barriers
Video length: 1:04 ⏱️
A barrier = never inherent in the student.
Teacher must consider what the student needs to help them get "unstuck."
Avoid a one-size-fits-all lesson plan; instead, tap into the unique ways students learn (consider the needs of kinaesthetic or visual learners).
Flexibility & Choice
Video length: 2:55 ⏱️
Provide agency and self-determination through choice and flexibility
Provide options for seating and allows students to sit where they learn best.
Encourage pre-learning through Learning Management Systems and other technologies.
Nurture positive interdependence through group activities.
Choiceboards
Video length: 1:00 ⏱️
There are many different types of learners, and so we should provide many different types of assessments. Many students struggle with reading or writing, which can prevent them from demonstrating their true level of comprehension. By providing choice boards, students have the opportunity to demonstrate their understanding in a way that is meaningful to them.
Stations Approach
Video length: 1:51 ⏱️
Station examples:
(1) individual work in quiet space;
(2) space to focus on a specific skill;
(3) simulation/scenario to practice communication skills.
arts-based choices
Video length: 1:52 ⏱️
Provide students with options in terms of how they use a space.
Include positive messaging, but not too many visuals so as not to overwhelm.
