Media A! After observing the plants throughout the last 4 weeks, it was clear that the seedling watered with media A did not grow as successfully as the other. The change in sodium level significantly stunted the seedling's growth and life span. Plant A's lack of sufficient nutrients resulted in its leaves and roots turning brown after 2 weeks. Plant A's height remained at a height of 2.0cm while plant B's height continued to grow into its current height of 4.0cm.
This experiment was demonstrated through sodium, whereas irrigation fields throughout California have other hard minerals that are even more damaging to the plants. This is a result of natural causes and also pollution through irrigation water. Natural rain water has a lower level of sodium and minerals that are ideal to most plants, however, long term irrigation in fields can lead to a buildup of excess sodium and minerals stunting agricultural growth.
This project has encouraged me to be more cautious about the way we may be harming the environment through simple lifestyles like watering plants. In the future, I hope to continue to study more on biological life and understand why they behave the way they do under different environment and conditions.
