The semester-long course will look at the day to day events going on in the local, state, national, and world news. Students will look at various news sites to search for the who, what, where, when, why significant of the article while also keeping an eye out for any slant or bias in the article. Students will be encouraged to look at the facts on all sides of a story, talk with parents/family members, and weigh their own beliefs to construct their own opinions.
Unless otherwise instructed, the first day of each week will have an article review due. Over the weekend, the students choose a current event that interests them and fully complete the Article Review form. During the school week, we will discuss events they bring in, read through Junior Scholastic magazines, and watch CNN10. At the end of the week, a quiz will be taken over the events discussed in class.
Throughout this class, I encourage students to talk with their family members about the events as discussed. I try my best to keep my opinions out of the discussion, and rather present the facts on both sides of the issue. There are times when a student will have a certain point of view and I will discuss the other side to help broaden their understanding.
Students are required to respect other students in the class, even if they don't agree with their opinions.
