It is true to say that research shows that those who read regularly perform better in exams than those who don't. However, at Lawrence Sheriff School we recognise that reading is far more important than this.
In our school you will see:
A flourishing and busy library run by our dedicated Librarian and supported by student librarians;
Dedicated reading time in form for all pupils and as part of PSHE for our Sixth Form students;
Wider reading encouraged across the curriculum and wider reading suggestions across all subject departments;
A whole school focus on vocabulary, comprehension and fluency.
Sharing reading as a community through the development of a curated collection of LSS books and Weekly Word book reviews;
Intervention and support for pupils who need it;
A range of engaging reading groups;
World Book Day celebrations and reading-related house competitions;
Transition reading and reading challenges for all;
10. Support and guidance for parents with how to support their child with reading for pleasure and progress.
Here are some recommended audiobooks and reading books for you over the summer/your time in sixth form:
We understand that the reading skills needed for Sixth Form pupils are different depending on the subject being studied. Linked here is a guide to how reading differs in different disciplinary areas: Disciplinary Literature
We also understand that A Level students need to read around their subjects and will have genuine curiosity in the subjects that they have chosen to study. Subject teachers and our librarian will be able to help you choose texts to read independently in September. The kind of reading you will be doing might be a little different to Year 11 study and the video at the end of this page will help you make that adjustment.
In the meantime, we look forward to you joining the school and hope that you have some time for reading for pleasure. In addition to the recommendations near the top of this page, this list will provide more inspiration: 18 Books To Read Before You Turn 18 (theodysseyonline.com). Do let us know what you think about these books. There are regular opportunities in form time and in school publications to share your views.
