Leadership, an elective for 7th and 8th graders at Walter Reed Middle School, is hosting The Great Kindness Challenge from January 26th to the 30th. There are many ways to be kind to someone, or something. The challenge week will bring kindness all throughout Reed, and hopefully have a positive impact on all students.
Monday January 26, was the first day of Kindness Week. Students were to wear orange for spirit points, which was recorded by leadership members who went around collecting data of how many people wore the correct color. Monday’s theme was to be kind to yourself. Students were given a colorful strip of paper, and instructed to write a positive message to themselves. They were then constructed into a kindness chain.
Tuesday January 27, was the second day of The Great Kindness Challenge. Today, students were to be kind to our lovely Walter Reed Middle School campus. They got sticker prizes for picking up trash and keeping our school clean. The color for Tuesday was red, and the students showed their care by cleaning our campus.
Wednesday the 28th, was meant to honor patients who are currently at Dignity Health Northridge. Students were given a piece of paper that was to be made into a thoughtful card. The finished cards were then turned in to the leadership students and then delivered to the patients. The cards were to be colorful and uplifting to give patients a light in the dark times they might be facing. Wednesday’s color was blue.
Thursday January 29, was the second to last day of Kindness Week. Students were to wear purple and send a message to a Reed staff member. They could either send a grateful Schoology message, thank them in person, or write a thoughtful card. Thursday was truly all about being grateful for the Reed staff that work so hard to make our school amazing.
Friday January 30th, the last day of the Kindness Challenge. Today’s color was green, and the activity was to be kind to others. Whether it was a peer, teacher, or friend, students got a sticker prize for complimenting, smiling, or saying “good morning” to someone. The main theme of Friday was to lift someone’s spirits and be kind to everyone in school.
In conclusion, Reed’s Kindness Challenge was a success! Just because Kindness Week is over, doesn’t mean you should stop being nice to people. Go out and lift someone’s spirits, whether it's at school or not, brighten their day.
