Project-Based Learning (Rock the Rigor Tuesday)
Our program strives to provide students with interdisciplinary project-based learning. Students will be asked to collaborate on projects that cover all of the different disciplines from their coursework - Science, English, History, Spanish, Robotics, and Computer Science.
Robotics Team
The Robotics Team was formed last year and it was also their first year competing. They had a phenomenal start to the program, taking 3rd place in the local regional league and being the #1 first year team. They are just getting started and looking for young, enthusiastic people interested in robotics and engineering. They are looking to collaborate with our Theater program, as well as the other Magnets to develop robotics for the Arts. They plan on incorporating robotics into the costumes, creating an unforgettable visual. Checking off every letter in STEAM, they are building a program for all kinds of people that are interested in learning, building, and innovating.
Science Bowl
The National Science Bowl is a science competition that includes subjects such as Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics, Earth Science, Energy, and Astrology. Our team has competed at the regional level, and are hoping to continue with new members as STEAM continues to grow. Teamwork is a key part of the Science Bowl as they participate with other LAUSD schools in a scrimmage and an official competition where they have the opportunity to take things to the national level.
Academic Decathlon
Academic Decathlon is an academic competition consisting of seven main categories: math, science, economics, social science, music, art and literature, along with the three included varsity categories being the essay competition, speech and interview. Each year is a provided theme, previous years including: Our Changing Climate: 24-25, Technology and Humanity: 23-24, American Revolution: 22-23, and Water: 21-22. Students can win scholarships out of this activity, and get a cord for participating in it.
Mock Trial
Mock Trial is a simulated trial competition taking place in a real courtroom with real judges. Once a year, teams across the nation receive a fictional court case packet including the crime committed, who is being charged, along with character witnesses and evidence. There are many roles students can actively participate in; from being a lawyer to a sketch artist, a journalist, or even a character witness. Competitions include two guaranteed trials, and excelling in both can involve going to state, or even nationals. Not only would students be able to put this on their college application, students who participate in this event will receive a cord for graduation.
Policy Debate
Our Policy Debate team participates in a year long season from October to May. Each year, the team argues under a resolution and is to argue under a plan within the resolution. Two different sides are argued: the affirmative and the negative. The resolution changes each year, with this upcoming year being, "The USFG should significantly strengthen its exploration and/or development of the Arctic." Students can win various awards from these once a month competitions, including speaker awards, team awards, and even scholarship money. The team works with the Los Angeles Metropolitan Debate League (LAMDL), a non profit organization that makes debate accessible to any and all. Students participating in it will recieve a cord for graduation.
