A Message From Dr. Maxey

I just wanted to take a moment to say “Thank You” to those of you who attended the Town Hall last week. I hope you found the information that was shared informative. For those who were unable to attend, I wanted to share the two calendar options that the LAUSD Board of Education is considering for the 2021-2022 school year. We want your feedback. Stakeholders may submit comments regarding the options by emailing schooloperations@lausd.net . The two options are:

Teacher of the week: Ms. Simons

adminstrator of the year: Principal Clarke

The reseda community of schools welcomes Ms. Godinez and Ms. Lieberman

We are excited to have Bernice Godinez joining the Reseda Community of Schools team as a Program Specialist. Her focus has been on teaching students with moderate to severe disabilities in the classroom and as part of the behavior support team. She has expertise in behavior with implementing tiered behavioral supports for students and classrooms. She is looking forward to supporting teachers, paraprofessionals, and students navigating the unique needs of learners and school sites in the Community. She is an advocate for student’s social emotional learning in the classroom and shares her excitement to see that LAUSD is putting more emphasis on those skills. In her free time Ms. Godinez is an avid runner and has participated in the Los Angeles Marathon as well as a few Disney runs! A warm welcome to Ms. Godinez joining the Reseda COS team.

Stacy Lieberman is the Systems of Support Adviser for the Reseda COS. During her 31 years in education, Stacy has been the Social Emotional Learning Adviser for LD Northwest and LD West. She has worked as an elementary and secondary teacher. She is passionate about supporting all stakeholders to achieve the social emotional skills needed to flourish.

National Women’s History Month

Women’s History Month is a celebration of women’s contributions to history, culture and society and has been observed annually in the month of March in the United States since 1987. Women’s History Month 2021 will take place from Monday, March 1-Wednesday, March 31, 2021.

The actual celebration of Women’s History Month grew out of a weeklong celebration of women’s contributions to culture, history and society organized by the school district of Sonoma, California, in 1978. Presentations were given at dozens of schools, hundreds of students participated in a “Real Woman” essay contest and a parade was held in downtown Santa Rosa.

A few years later, the idea had caught on within communities, school districts and organizations across the country. In 1980, President Jimmy Carter issued the first presidential proclamation declaring the week of March 8 as National Women’s History Week. The U.S. Congress followed suit the next year, passing a resolution establishing a national celebration. Six years later, the National Women’s History Project successfully petitioned Congress to expand the event to the entire month of March.

CHOICES

Providing your child with choices is a powerful tool that helps address behavior and motivates your child to engage in expected behaviors. Giving your child choices fosters ownership and supports independence. When your child displays resistant behavior in following your expectations, offering choices allows your child to feel that their voices are acknowledged and that they have some control. There are many ways to embed choice making throughout your child’s day. You can allow them to choose what task they can do first, next, and last. They can also choose what materials to use such as a color pen, crayons, markers or colored pencils. Or when they are working asynchronously, they can choose where they want to work such as in the backyard, the patio, the bedroom, the dining room or the living room. They can also choose with whom they are going to work with or when the task can be done as another way that we empower our children in making choices.
