The documents below also help students compare scholarly and popular articles. The first one on the left is a blank form for students to use. The second one has some answers. The last two boxes are a scholarly article and a link to a popular -or general press- article, both on the subject of dating. They were selected to facilitate the comparison. These materials come from the U.C. Merced website. I am happy to look for articles that may fit better with your subject area. Think about how you could compare two different types of sources with your students.

Quick Lesson Idea: This short video shows students the basics of searching for articles in a database. It's very different from searching Google. Have students decide on a topic they would like to research. Send them to the a database on the Digital Library and have them find 1-3 subject terms that help them find an article that best matches the topic they originally had in mind. Please ask me for help selecting the database.

Quick Lesson Ideas: Consider having your students read a few on a timely topic. Have them pretend to be peer reviewers and select the one article that they believe makes the most imporant contribution to that topic. Ask you librarian to help you find the articles if you would like. Another idea: have students consider some problematic aspects of the peer review process.

The handout on the left helps students access the five databases in our Digital Library that show both sides of a whole range of issues. It also provide some support for MLA Citations. I am happy to adapt it for the style manual that is used for your subject area. You could consider having students do something as simple as creating a works cited page with a number of articles on a single topic. This helps them locate the citation tools and learn how to format a citation and works cited page. Baby steps get them closer to the goal.
