Quick lesson idea: Ask your students to practice paraphrasing, quoting, and summarizing the same text -and then citing the text. You can even use Schoology discussions for this. It's a great way to compare their efforts to help students see what makes a good paraphrase, a good summary, and a properly punctuated quote. I once had a senior working on a senior research paper who thought that when the teacher told them to find quotes for the paper, the student was supposed to look for sentences in quotation marks. Small activities will help students later on.

Copying someone else's work is cheating, and it's a serious form of theft. If you receive a better grade through cheating than someone who actually worked hard and just didn't get as many answers correct, you will be stealing their opportuntities from them. You may get into college instead of them. If you do, you will probably have to cheat your way through college. When you get a job, you may be stealing the job from people who are better qualified to do it. At that point, you will be stealing from your company or your client as you have positioned yourself to provide a service that you are not fully qualified to perform.

I am happy to meet with your class in person or via online meetings to help teach them how and when to cite sources. The Powerpoint embedded on the right provides a lot of information about MLA Citations and formatting. I am happy to work with you to create activities and quizzes for formatting MLA, APA, and ACS papers.

However, I recommend having all students use the EasyBib Extension in Chrome. It automatically creates a works cited section as well as the citations. You can also have students use CitationMachine in Purdue Owl and then import their citations into their document. All the databases in the Digital Library also have citation tools. Unfortunately, Microsoft Word online does not provide the tools to generate a works cited page.
