Once you've found your book, head to the librarian's desk!
All you need is your full name or your student ID card
Checkouts are for two weeks
Students may check out up to three books at a time
Once you're done reading your book, take it back to the library!
Students must return books before or on the due date to avoid late fees
Books must be returned to the librarian's desk in the condition they were borrowed
Not done reading your book, but the due date's already here? Visit the librarian to renew it!
Come to the library on or before your due date to renew without late fees
Renewals are for two weeks
Books can renewed twice before they must be returned
Forgot to bring your book back to the library before the due date?
Bring your book back to the library as soon as you can
Every school day the book is late costs 10¢ in fines
All fines stop at $5 or 50 days
Overdue books are different from lost books
If you lost your library book, don't panic, there are a few options available!
Lost books can cost anywhere from $15-$30 per book
Lost reference books or special editions may be $40 or more
Lost fines can be paid at once or broken up into smaller payments; the library accepts cash payments for all fees and lost fines
If students/families can find hardcover replacements for the book they lost, the library can accept the replacement instead of the fine so long as the librarian has cleared the exchange
Library books are specially bound hardcovers and cannot be replaced by paperback editions
If the lost book isn't available in hardcover or is no longer in print, the librarian may have alternate book replacement suggestions - please call (818.654.3300), email (aviya.mcguire@lausd.net), or send your student to ask!
Sometimes, students will enter Portola with lost or overdue books from their previous school. If found, those books should be returned to the original school site they were borrowed from, not Portola. If lost, the lost fine/replacement fee should be turned into the original school site the book came from, as the fees belong to and fund that school's library collection.
