How often do we take the time to pursue our own meaningful goals?
The MYP Personal Project is the culminating, year long project for 10th graders. It is the opportunity to take a step outside of their regular coursework to plan a learning goal and outcome based on their personal interests, skills, and knowledge.
This is an independent project that encourages students to manage their time and organization with the guidance of a supervisor. Their learning goal and outcome allows them to pursue an area of impact in their life, education, or future workplace.
The Personal Project Handbook contains information and guidelines for students, supervisors and mentors. The use of this handbook is crucial for students, especially those students that are not enrolled in a Design 10 course. Students should reference the handbook as they work on the Personal Project and prior to meeting with their mentor. This Handbook is modeled in conjunction with the IB MYP Projects Guide For Use, from September 2021.
The objectives of MYP projects encompass the factual, conceptual, procedural and metacognitive dimensions of knowledge. Listed below are the objectives of the personal project specifically.
Students should be able to:
state a learning goal for the project and explain how a personal interest led to that goal
state an intended product and develop appropriate success criteria for the product
present a clear, detailed plan for achieving the product and its associated success criteria.
Students should be able to:
explain how the ATL skill(s) was/were applied to help achieve their learning goal
explain how the ATL skill(s) was/were applied to help achieve their product.
Students should be able to:
explain the impact of the project on themselves or their learning
evaluate the product based on the success criteria.

The Process Journal
The process journal is the most important part of your entire personal project. If your process journal is thorough and well-organized, it will make it easier for you to write the final report.
Document your thinking, ideas and the development of the project
It is a working document, it does not need to be neat and well presented
Show your supervisor evidence of the process documented in the journal at every meeting or by providing digital access
It can be written, visual, audio or a combination of these and might include both paper and electronic formats.
Each entry in your process journal should be clearly dated for your future reference.
Possible things to include in your process journal
Helpful headings: you could use to provide a structure to your journal, ensuring you make best use of the journaling process
Work completed this week: this section should detail all aspects of work completed on the personal project in the week
Resources consulted: you can record bibliographical details in this section. You should also record details of any conversations that took place with sources relating to the project
Challenges or difficulties faced: you should detail obstacles and indicate how you did or intended to deal with them
Evaluation of progress: this is where you should refer to your initial goals and indicate whether or not you are achieving them. You may also identify any areas that need improvement at this stage
What are the 5 elements to receive credit?
At Eagle Rock Junior Senior High School, students will complete five elements:
Process Journal—ideas, criteria, developments, challenges, plans, research, possible solutions and progress reports
Report—an account of the project and its impact, to a structure that follows the assessment criteria. The report includes a bibliography and evidence from the process journal that documents students’ development and achievements.
Product or Outcome—evidence of tangible or intangible results: what the student was aiming to achieve or create
Video Presentation— multimedia content with a duration of several minutes that shows the benefits of a product, service, or any idea with the help of interesting graphic images, concise text, and appropriate narration.
Showcase—We celebrate the students’ learning journey with the community by displaying personal projects. Students must be present to receive Service Learning credit.
