Mental fitness is your ability to think clearly, stay focused, handle stress, and bounce back from setbacks. Just like push-ups build muscle, mental training strengthens your ability to lead, learn, and stay calm under pressure.
In JROTC, you’re expected to lead, follow, solve problems, and stay disciplined. Mental fitness helps you:
Stay focused during class, drill, or competition
Make smart decisions under pressure
Stay calm when things get tough
Work well with others even when you’re frustrated
Bounce back from failure or criticism
You can build mental fitness the same way you build physical strength—by practicing. Here’s how:
Set goals and stick to them
Use positive self-talk instead of tearing yourself down
Visualize success before a performance or event
Practice mindfulness or breathing to stay calm
Reflect on mistakes and learn from them
Push through discomfort instead of quitting
Mental fitness is your inner strength. It helps you lead with confidence, stay mission-focused, and be resilient when things don’t go your way. Just like PT, the more you train your mind, the stronger it gets.
Jocko Willink is a retired U.S. Navy SEAL officer, author, podcaster, and leadership consultant. He served 20 years in the Navy, including as the commander of SEAL Team Three’s Task Unit Bruiser during the Battle of Ramadi in Iraq—one of the most decorated special operations units of the war.
Jocko is the co-author of the #1 New York Times bestseller Extreme Ownership: How U.S. Navy SEALs Lead and Win, which he wrote with fellow SEAL Leif Babin. The book outlines powerful leadership lessons based on real combat experience and how those principles apply to business, teams, and everyday life.
After retiring, Jocko co-founded Echelon Front, a leadership consulting firm that trains individuals and organizations using the principles of discipline, accountability, and ownership. He also hosts the popular Jocko Podcast, where he shares lessons on leadership, resilience, and mental toughness.
Jocko emphasizes that leadership is about taking responsibility, making tough decisions, and putting the mission and your team above personal comfort—values that align closely with JROTC’s focus on character and service.
Stoicism is an ancient philosophy that teaches self-discipline, resilience, and rational thinking. Originally practiced by leaders and warriors, Stoicism helps individuals stay focused, calm under pressure, and guided by strong values—qualities that directly support the mission of JROTC.
For cadets, Stoicism encourages:
Emotional control – staying calm in stressful situations
Responsibility – focusing on what you can control
Resilience – learning to face setbacks with strength and purpose
Character and virtue – acting with honesty, courage, and self-discipline, even when it's hard
By practicing Stoic principles, cadets can become better students, stronger leaders, and more capable citizens—ready to face challenges with confidence and lead by example.
PragerU (Prager University Foundation) is a nonprofit organization that creates educational videos focused on American history, values, leadership, economics, and civics. Its mission is to promote critical thinking, personal responsibility, and informed citizenship—all values aligned with the goals of the JROTC program.
PragerU offers a wide range of short, engaging videos that can help JROTC cadets:
Better understand American government, history, and constitutional principles
Explore different viewpoints on current events and civic responsibility
Develop leadership qualities through lessons on character, accountability, and ethical decision-making
Strengthen communication skills by analyzing and discussing real-world topics
By encouraging cadets to think critically and reflect on American values, PragerU can be a helpful resource in shaping well-rounded, informed future leaders and citizens.
Physical fitness is your body’s ability to perform daily tasks with strength, endurance, and energy—while avoiding injury and staying healthy. In JROTC, physical fitness is a key part of building a strong mind, body, and character.
The Physical Training (PT) program promotes fitness through weekly workouts and encourages cadets to exercise on their own. After willful Participation, improving fitness is our #2 priority.
Being Fit Helps You
Perform better in JROTC and school
Build confidence and self-discipline
Improve focus and resilience
Support teammates through stronger teamwork
Feel more energized and less stressed
Cadet Fitness Goals (Minimum)
15 push-ups
30 curl-ups
1:30 forearm plank
Run one mile without stopping
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recommends:
At least 60 minutes of physical activity daily
Mostly aerobic activity (walking, running, biking)
Strength training at least 3 days per week
If you're not there yet, that's okay—just start. Progress takes effort and consistency. Working out with a battle buddy keeps you motivated and accountable. Physical fitness isn’t just about muscles—it's about being your best, inside and out.
Bottom line: Regular exercise makes you stronger, healthier, and more prepared for anything—on the drill pad, in the classroom, or in life.
The NJROTC Cadet Fitness Assessment (CFA) is a standardized physical fitness test designed to evaluate a cadet's overall health, endurance, and strength. It is administered quarterly, counts as a Major (60%) grade, and helps cadets track their progress as well as set goals for personal improvement.
Cadets are tested in three key areas:
Forearm Plank (or Curl Ups) – Measures core strength and endurance
Right-Angle Push-Ups – Measures upper body strength and muscular endurance
One-Mile Run – Measures cardiovascular endurance
Cadets must achieve at least a "Satisfactory" rating in all three events to earn credit
Cadets who meet standards may qualify for the NJROTC Physical Fitness Ribbon and other honors
Performance is based on biological sex and age-appropriate standards as outlined in the Cadet Reference Manual (CRM)
All required annual health and participation forms must be current and on file. Cadets without completed forms are ineligible to participate and will receive a zero grade.
Cadets must be cleared for physical activity and are required to complete at least one CFA per semester. Failure to do so will result in a zero grade.
JROTC encourages all cadets to improve their fitness through regular exercise and training. The CFA is not just a test—it’s a tool to help you build strength, confidence, and discipline.
