GCSE Results Day 2023
Thursday 24th August 2023

Year 11 students at Sir Joseph Williamson’s Mathematical School celebrated a year of superb results this week.

In the benchmark Progress 8 measure, the school expects to achieve above +0.80. This means that, on average, students have achieved more than half a grade better than expected in each of their subjects.

55.45% of all grades were at 7-9, up from 45% in 2019, the last comparable year.

98% achieved 5+ grades in English and mathematics, while 99% gained a standard pass in both subjects. The average grade per GCSE course taken by the students was 6.72.

72% of all grades in mathematics were at the top 7-9 band, and 64% of those in English.

The average grade achieved across the Ebacc group of subjects was 6.85.

The Attainment 8 measure, average pupil achievement across 8 qualifications, including English and maths and at least 3 other English Baccalaureate qualifications was 70.01.

Many students did exceptionally well in their GCSEs this year, but of particular note from those pictured are Liam and Muhammad, who achieved 10 and 8 grade 9s respectively; Anish, Hashim, Matthew, and Adam, also achieved 18 grade 9s between them.

The highest individual performances were recorded by:

Overall, 79 students, nearly 40% of the whole year group, achieved only grades 6 and above.

Eliot Hodges, Principal, said “We’re proud of the successes our students have achieved. We’re particularly delighted that so many gained the top grades because this was a target for us and places our students in a very strong position for sixth form study.”
