LAB16

LAB16 enrolment will take place alongside results day on Thursday 24th August. Please see the website and further communications for details nearer the time.

As the end of term approaches, work on getting ready for our first intake of Post-16 students is increasing. We have now interviewed all students who applied for a place at LAB16, and conditional offers (based on achieving 6 GCSEs at grade 6 for the Diploma programme and 5 GCSEs at grade 5 for the Careers-related programme) have been sent out to all interviewees.

We recently hosted our very first LAB16 Taster Day on 4th July, where all applicants were invited to join us to find out more about what life at LAB16 will look like. Students took part in IB lessons and teambuilding activities as well as meeting  a range of guests: from University representatives to former IB students.

Enrolment day for LAB16 is the 24th August. Students will be able to enrol at LAB16 with a copy of their GCSE results showing that they have met the requirements. The LAB16 team will be at Results Day to help students through the enrolment process.

All LAB16 students will be attending an Induction Week organised by the LAB16 team and NCS (the National Citizenship Service) during w/c 11th September, which will take place at an outdoors centre in the South East of England. This is a fantastic opportunity to get their Post 16 journey started with a bang, and we are very much looking forward to helping them get the most out of the experience.

With best wishes,

LAB16 Taster Day

On July 4th 2023 LAB16 opened its doors for the first time to prospective year 12 students. Every student who had applied to LAB16 was invited to a Taster Day, to help them get a clearer picture of study on the IB courses we offer and life at LAB16 in general. The students started with a quick tour of the IB Core programmes - CAS (Creativity, Action, Service),  the Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge. In under an hour they made bug hotels, debated some big philosophical questions and brainstormed how to approach a 4,000 word piece of work.

They then attended two taster lessons chosen from Biology, Maths, English Literature or History in order to get a feel for the differences between GCSE and IB Diploma level learning. Students were engrossed in logarithms, the military strategy of the Second World War, debates around evolution and close analysis of contemporary poetry.

Lunch was spent discussing their future  options with our guests - outreach professionals from London universities, representatives from the National Citizenship Service and former IB Diploma students from Dartford Grammar School, before an afternoon of teambuilding activities in the Sports Hall.

The day concluded with a fascinating speech by Dr Mary Richards, Programme Director of Transdisciplinary Studies in Global Change at Brunel University. Dr Richards’ presentation emphasised the importance of a broad education in the 21st century, a persuasive argument for studying the IB Diploma.

Students left happy and well-informed, ready to take the next step and join LAB16 for real in August.

LAB16 Taster Day: A student’s view…

LAB gave an incredible experience of how Post-16 would be constructed in the next few years, giving helpful taster lessons on subjects we would be learning through the IB. The day was really fun, allowing us to interact with the external students, helping us create new friends and a lovely environment. We were given a series of activities to help tap into our creativity, research skills, communication skills and to have us focus on the academic aspect of courses offered here. My favourite part of the day was interacting with a series of people from universities and students who have already completed the IB, who spoke about their experiences and gave us advice of what will be helpful for the future.
