As we come to the end of our second module, Airy staff and students should feel proud of the wonderful start they have made to the new Academic year. The past two modules have been extremely busy with lots of events and co curricular opportunities. For example; Culture Day, Day of languages, BIMA digital day, Blood Brothers theatre trip, Black History Month, Our Remembrance service, Ice skating, Save the children Christmas jumper day, to name but a few. Please check out our curriculum pages for more details on these.
As you are aware, we continue to have a drive on attendance and punctuality at LAB. Recognition should be given to all for their resilience in achieving such good levels of attendance over the past two modules. Airy college attendance ends Module 2 with a year to date attendance figure of 92%, which is above the national averages. However, we still endeavour to return to pre COVID attendance expectations of a minimum of 95%. Therefore there is still some work to do across all year groups to get to this improved figure.
We have loved welcoming our new Year 7s into the Airy community.
Our year 7 students have made a fantastic start to their LAB journey. They have transitioned extremely well from primary school and have been demonstrating the LAB values in their day to day habits. They have shown phenomenal growth in the past seven and a half weeks and are fully integrated into the Airy community. Year 7 Airy students have topped the leaderboard for attendance with an impressive 96% attendance since September. A special mention to Year 7 Airy who have gained the most merits across LAB in Module 1 & 2 with a total of 2886 merits.
Here is what they have to say about their first term at secondary school.
"My LAB experience so far is good and enjoyable. I really like this school more than my primary school because the food is better, the education is easier to comprehend and I have learnt a lot, I have really nice friends who I enjoy being with, and overall, I just love it. "
"In primary school, Science used to be my least favourite subject but ever since I came to LAB, it is now my favourite. I really like how we start in English in chronological order and I love the different types of books in the library and how they are diverse too - I even saw a book about my country which made me feel happy."
"I feel like I will benefit a lot from my education at LAB because I want to be an orthopaedic surgeon and Unifrog will help me and so will my tutor, Ms Alam. "
"My friends in my class are so nice that it just makes me want to smile seeing them and they are really understanding and accepting of your decisions."
"Since I've joined the school, Leigh Academy has been fun because I have made lots of new friends and have learnt lots more knowledge in the lessons."

"My experience at lab has been incredible so far, with all the kind students and welcoming teachers. "
"My favourite part about Leigh Academy Blackheath is that most of the clubs are free so I get to have fun a lot."
"My lab experience so far has been really fun and enjoyable. I love learning during lessons and being able to work together sometimes as well. I also love how when walking around the school the teachers are all friendly and in the playground we can make jokes. This was nothing like what i expected when I first started secondary but in fact even better!"
"My LAB experience so far has been really good, I really like the teachers and the food is great. I bet next year, the new year 7 will have a great experience and really enjoy themselves."

Year 11’s have shown impressive dedication in the most recent round of PPE examinations. We continue to be impressed by our year students, who have shown commitment and a mature approach to their GCSEs. It has been wonderful to see how positively students across both year groups have engaged with the challenge and dedication to their studies.
Each module in Airy, we celebrate and recognize students in the college that have gone above and beyond each week. Students who have consistently demonstrated the LAB values of Ambition, Integrity, Resilience, Scholarship and Respect are celebrated and recognised by our college community. Tutors tutors have been nominating a member of their tutor group and identifying the reason for their nomination. The wider Airy college team then votes for the winning student every week.
All students nominated receive appreciations in assemblies with the reasons they have been nominated also shared.
At the end of each module we also have the opportunity to invite students to attend our Airy Celebration Breakfast. Students will be invited for consistently displaying the LAB values and for collecting the highest amount of merits. The event falls on the last week of the module.
All Airy college and LAB staff would like to thank Mrs Ford, Airy SSM, for her wonderful pastoral support and to wish her and her family lots of luck as she goes on maternity leave to have her twins.
Finally, we would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our community both in school and at home for your continued support. We are looking forward to welcoming you back in the new year to start module 3 on Thursday 5th January for all students.
Airy College staff would like to wish you and your families a very Merry Christmas.
Ms Lindars & Team Airy
