Rehearsals for Oliver! The Musical is now in full swing and our cast are busy learning their lines and practising their dances ready for our performances from Wednesday 29th - Friday 30th March 2022. The cast have already shown fantastic commitment and enthusiasm for the show and we are really looking forward to our second full scale production! AV Club are also working hard to learn all they can about lights and sound, and everything in between.
We cannot wait for the Oliver! Cast and the AV club to collaborate later this academic year to create a spectacular performance for you!
Ticket information will be available in the new year, so keep your eyes peeled. It really is setting up to be a fantastic show, not to be missed!
Here are the results. 3 strong mustaches grown all for a great cause. If you would like to donate to the Movember charity and help raise money that will go towards supporting men's mental health, please follow this link.
Last year's production of Matilda.
This was an amazing opportunity to perform as we have not been able to perform this number outside of the school yet and were so happy to perform to a wider audience. Some of our team have not had the opportunity to perform on a stage before and said they really enjoyed the experience of being able to do so. It was a very exciting experience and the host of the evening loved it and said it was “just as good or better than the West End version!”
We hope to be invited back to perform next year as well as more opportunities to perform in our local community!
Debate Society takes place every Thursday after school. Everyone is welcome to come and join in our debates. The past two modules have been full of research, idea formulation and active debate.
The Uffington White Horse, Oxfordshire
Debating can help you to form arguments and chains of reasoning. We took a philosophical question and tried to make an argument from it. ‘Is a white horse still a horse? is a paradox in Chinese philosophy attributed to Gongsun Long, a philosopher of the Warring States period. Students were grouped to try to answer and debate this question. At first, students were a little bemused by the question. Does colour matter? Is the classification of an animal more important than how the animal looks? Students found it much easier to agree with the statement. However, we then started to think differently about the question. Are there examples of different horses? For example, did you know there are 271 pubs in the UK named the ‘White Horse? Have you seen any of the 8 white horses carved into chalk hills in England?
The Uffington White Horse was created some time between 1380 and 550 bc, during the late Bronze Age or early Iron Age. The site is owned and managed by the National Trust and is a scheduled monument.
Students have been working through coding challenges in scratch and using the python language. They have been mastering skills and sharing their creations with each other to see who can get the high score.
A group of our Year 9 students have been hard at work programming a top down 2D game and are currently writing the back-end code before they start designing the appearance. This humble project started off as a text-based adventure game which has since escalated into the beginnings of a “Legend of Zelda” type experience. After running into several problems in the production the students have solved the problem of traversing across the stage.

AV club (audio-visual club) is an interactive, interesting and fun after-school club that runs on a Tuesday afternoon from 3:15pm to 4:15pm. There are a range of fun activities but are working towards doing the costumes, lighting, music and more for the school play next year (Oliver! March 2023). We also do other activities that are for fun rather than slightly serious like our mini concert. We have done a range of different things so far; all directed by Miss Kalnins. This year, the play is going to be Oliver Twist. We are split into separate departments that we choose for ourselves: costumes, lights, sound and advertisement. The different teams are working very hard to make sure that the play turns out to be an incredible success; at least as good as we can make it.
AV club offers great opportunities and has actually taught me skills; like how to plan. However, it is only the start of the year so it is still a great opportunity to join if anybody would like to! As a member of the AV club, I know it’s a great place and very enjoyable. Furthermore, if anyone would like to pursue a career on stage, but you don’t want to be the centre of attention, AV club is perfect!
