This past week, we learned about the "Sammy Rule" in Phonics. When there is a one syllable word, with a short vowel, followed by a consonant (s, f, l, z), we double it (ss, ff, ll, zz). To help remember which consonants fit this rule, we use the saying, "Sammy loves friendly zebras." Make sure to ask your student about it! This upcoming week, we will be starting our new Math unit about understanding the meaning of addition and subtraction. Often times students may think addition means "plus" and subtraction means "minus," without understanding what those symbols actually represent. So we're going to explore the concept of "joining" and "taking away" with relatable math problems!

After a summer filled with much eagerness and excitement over meeting our first grade class, I was thrilled to see everyone on the first day of school. In order to get to know each other, we learned how to work together with a puzzle activity and started the day with our Morning Meeting. We discussed our hopes and dreams for first grade (make new friends, have fun, learn new things, etc.) and what we can do to help each other fulfill those this year. To emphasize the importance of the "Coyote Way," we collaborated in teams to create posters on how to make good choices. To build our classroom community, we also painted a class mural with the saying "We are Better Together." This was a great start to the school year and I can't wait for the upcoming week!

This past week, we had so much fun presenting our "Water and Color" project at the STEM Expo. Thank you all so much for leaving comment cards for our class project! It made our first graders so excited and proud to read all of the notes. We also had a lot of fun learning about different careers and passions for our first annual Career Week! A big shout out to all of our parent volunteers from both first grade classes. We learned all about self driving cars, being an engineering manager at Apple, a snow sports instructor, a museum app maker, a firefighter, a camera engineer at Apple, as well as a pediatrician/neonatologist. This upcoming week, we will be continuing our science unit all about space patterns and analyzing the different positions of the sun throughout the day.

After a summer filled with much eagerness and excitement over meeting our first grade class, I was thrilled to see everyone on the first day of school. In order to get to know each other, we learned how to work together with a puzzle activity and started the day with a Morning Meeting (which we will do every day). To emphasize the importance of the "Coyote Way," we collaborated in teams to create posters on how to make good choices. To build our classroom community, we also painted a class mural with the saying "We are Better Together." This was a great start to the school year and I can't wait for the upcoming week!
