August 2020
Welcome, Students and Families!
We are honored that you have chosen to participate in the LAPS Online Learning Academy for the 2020-21 school year. Whether your decision was based on safety, convenience, flexibility or consistency, we want you to know that we are committed to your child’s physical, social, emotional and academic well-being.
As a district, we believe that who we are and what we do matters more than the medium of doing it, and that the quality of learning is not confined to a specific location. Our goal remains the same-- to ensure that all of our students are learning and have the same opportunity to THRIVE.
We want to assure LAOLA families that the enhanced online learning model will look different than the crisis-response remote learning in the spring. LAPS has spent the past several months developing a more robust, sustainable, and engaging learning experience for our students. As a learning organization, our work to improve is never done. In the words of one of my favorite educators, “When we know better, we do better.”
Your new online school is committed to the following actions and principles.
The first days of school will be devoted to community building and digital competency.
Parents will be critical partners in the learning process. Teachers will empower parents with information to allow them to help their students stay engaged and accountable. In order to facilitate this, our communication with parents and caregivers will be more thorough, streamlined and predictable.
Every student will be in a classroom with a highly qualified teacher from our community who will develop a grade-level appropriate instruction and educational experience.
The focus of face-to-face time with teachers will be active learning to promote student engagement and interaction in order to produce tangible outcomes.
Instruction will have a compelling purpose to ensure that essential content in ELA and Math are taught to mastery.
Teachers will provide explicit instructions through multiple avenues for both synchronous and asynchronous learning.
Students will have opportunities to demonstrate mastery of skills and concepts through project-based learning.
We believe that students participating in the Online Learning Academy will have a unique opportunity to experience and develop the characteristics and qualities of life-long learners. In a world full of uncertainty and change, the goal of LAOLA is to offer students and families an exceptional educational experience that is both stable and consistent.
Thank you for your patience and understanding as we work through the next two weeks to finalize details in time for the first day of school.
