Message from the Principal

Welcome Aspen Families!

It is my pleasure to welcome you to Aspen Elementary School and the upcoming school year. We are committed to making every child feel welcomed, connected, and a part of the Aspen family. In addition, we are dedicated to providing a quality educational experience for each child.

First, I would like to introduce myself in my role as the Aspen Elementary School Principal. I taught for over two decades in the Los Alamos Public Schools before becoming the principal at Aspen. My husband and I have raised two children who attended LAPS schools, which prepared them well for college and careers. My outside interests include gardening, art, and hiking. I like rainbows too!

Education has been evolving in the age of COVID, but the Aspen staff has proven that they are up to the challenge! While our work centers on student learning our first priority is the health and safety of our students and staff. You can rely on us to stay vigilant throughout the year and protect our students and staff through training and strict hygiene and social distancing protocols.

Communication is an essential building block for promoting a positive school-home connection that nurtures your child academically and emotionally. I use School Messenger to send quick updates, urgent information, and newsletters to all Aspen families. Since these are sent to the emails and cell numbers that you submitted in your School Mint registration please make sure your information is correct. Also, your classroom teachers keep parents informed about classroom learning and your child’s progress through PowerSchool, emails, phone calls, meetings, and newsletters. New this year is the Aspen Learning Resources website for families, which is a one-stop place to connect families to each teacher’s classroom resources. In addition, we are using Google Classroom, SeeSaw K/1, and Clever school-wide as our teachers’ digital platforms for learning. Finally, you are always welcome to contact me with questions.

It will be a good year as we continue our tradition of excellence in learning. We have a caring and capable staff that works together each day to achieve success for our students at every level. Together, we are building a thriving learning community committed to –

  • A Supportive Culture

  • Engaged Learning

  • Seeing Challenges as Opportunities

It is with belief in the power of education in a child’s life that I lead our school through these unusual times, and I look forward to building a relationship with each one of you. See you at Aspen!

Mrs. Michele Altherr, Principal
