This week, our Journalism Club researched the International Nurses Day (12th May) and the World Day for Cultural Diversity (21st of May). Our journalists have interviewed teachers about their views regarding each topic.
At Langley Park, we are celebrating World Day for Cultural Diversity this week and the school has organised lovely activities for all of us to participate throughout. We all look forward to the African Drumming assembly!
International Nurses Day is a day observed around the world on the 12th May each year. It is to mark the contributions that nurses make to society. It’s a special day to say thank you to nurses for all the hard work that they do. Nurses help people feel better when they’re sick or hurt, and they work in places like hospitals and clinics. This day is also the birthday of Florence Nightingale, a famous nurse who helped soldiers and was called the “Lady with the Lamp.” She helped make nursing what it is today! On this day, people give cards, flowers, and kind words to nurses. Nurses are kind, caring, and very important, and they deserve to be celebrated!
How do nurses help us? What does being a nurse mean to you?
Miss Gibson: "They help if I am unwell or go for check ups. They are helping others in need."
Mrs Brazendale: "They look after the poorly people. It's a big responsibility and very rewarding"
Miss Nixon: "They help us if we need them in hospitals. It would be tiring."
Diversity Day is a special time to celebrate how everyone is different and special. People have different skin colours, languages, traditions, and ways of life. This day reminds us to be kind, respectful, and open to learning about others.
At school, children might share their culture, wear traditional clothes, or try new foods together. We can learn about each other through music, games, and stories from around the world. Diversity makes the world more fun, colourful, and exciting. On Diversity Day, we remember that being different is a wonderful thing!
Why is it good that people are different? What are some ways people can be different from each other?
Miss Russell: "People can show off different talents. It is where you celebrate people that come from different languages and backgrounds."
