GPA

What's G.P.A.?

G.P.A. is short for Grade Point Average. Just like there is a percentage used to calculate your grade (See Grade Scale). There is a point value connected to your Overall Grade that impacts your G.P.A.

Don't freak out!

I know it looks complicated but it's really not once you get the hang of it. So here is what the picture is showing you.
The grade is on the far left, the point value for that grade is next to it, you would then multiple the point value by however many of each grade you have (citizenship grade is not used in GPA). Once you have all the your points per grade calculated. You would then add the points together to get your total points. Once you have your total points, you would divide by 7 because you have 7 classes. This will give you a decimal number which should give you an idea of where your GPA is currently.

It's basically, just like figuring out the average or the mean for a math problem. You add all the numbers together and divide by however many numbers there were to begin with.

Why GPA Matters to Colleges

Why is GPA important?

It matters because...

  • GPA in middle school and high school is used to determine how well you are doing academically. If you are doing poorly in a certain class, perhaps, you need more support.

  • GPA is a used to determine if you are eligible for certain privileged activites such as: Field Trips, Dances, Games, Representing our school as a team member in a sport etc

  • In the future, colleges will look at your GPA in High School to determine if you are eligiable to apply and be accepted into their college/university. Yes, colleges and universities do have minimum GPA requirements.

In Lancaster, the High School District will not accept you at any of their High School's unless you have a 3.66 Overall GPA. If you're at the end of 8th grade and do not meet that requirement, you will need to take classes over in summer school.
