Rather than just photographing subjects, Siskind tried to use photography to convey his own emotions, which led to the development of abstract art for which he became well known. He started taking pictures of the textures and patterns of commonplace objects like seaweed, coiled ropes, and footprints in the sand in the early 1940s. His work consists of up-close shots of details, not many people would take notice of on the daily.
