Mentoring in the Lancaster Eastside Teacher Induction Program:

Requirements to be a Mentor:

Minimum Qualifications

  • A Clear California Teaching Credential or equivalent
  • CLAD, BCLAD, 1969 or other equivalent certification, SDAIE, or ELD certificate.
  • Tenure within the school district.
  • Three years successful teaching experience.

Other desirable qualities:

  • Wide range of teaching styles and strategies.
  • Commitment to excellence, getting the job done, and ability to balance time commitments.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively use leadership and interpersonal skills as well as understanding of adult learning theory.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Willingness to participate in the reflection of your teaching practice
  • Commitment to full implementation of the Common Core State Standards.
  • Familiarity with California Standards for the Teaching Profession and State Frameworks.

When: Induction Mentors’ term of service will begin depending on Induction program needs.

Stipend: $35.00/hr per participant—up to $2,030 per partner. Induction Mentors may work with one or two induction candidates. Additional funding will be provided by Induction Program for release days.

Duties: 58 hours of logged support per Induction Program partner, including:

  • Average of one hour per week (40 hours), outside of the compensated school day for support and completion of events.
  • Attend monthly Induction Program Workshops and Induction Mentor meetings and trainings.
  • Complete monthly Time Log

Mentor Responsibilities:

Each Mentor meets with his/her Candidate/Intern for a minimum of one hour per week to plan, problem-solve, provide “just in time” and deeper analysis and reflection on teaching practice. In addition to the weekly meetings, Mentors are required to:

  • Facilitate growth and development via modeling, guided reflection on practice, and feedback on classroom instruction.
  • Connect Candidate with available resources to support professional growth in individual areas of focus.
  • Support development and reflective practice on Candidate’s individual goals
  • Attend all required Induction Cohort workshops with Candidate
  • Assist Candidate in developing their Individual Learning Plan
  • Schedule and attend Initial Triad Meeting with Site Administrator and Candidate
  • Observe Candidate once in the Fall and once in the Spring, as well as assist Candidate with observations of a veteran teacher
  • Support Candidate in the Reflective Growth Process
  • Attend Mentor Trainings
  • Notify Program Facilitator if Candidate fails to complete Induction Requirements
  • Schedule and attend Year 1 - Spring Triad Meeting with Site Administrator and Candidate

HOURS (outside of school day)

  1. Meet with Induction Candidate weekly for at least 1 hour. Each Mentor/Candidate is REQUIRED to meet a minimum of 40 hours per school year, with a maximum of 58 compensable hours.
  2. Attend monthly two-hour cohort workshops with Induction Candidate(s)
  3. Attend Induction Mentor trainings

Support Hours are spent with the Induction Candidate (conferring, demonstrating lessons, observing, etc.) Note: Any time recorded during your regular contract workday is not eligible for additional compensation from Induction Program. Support also includes time outside the presence of your Induction Candidate (training, Candidate meetings, preparing notes, re-reading performance tasks, phone calls, e-mails, texts, preparing for sub plans for observations or demo lessons, etc.)
