Each year, our department selects a "Word of the Year" to guide our work and inspire our students. For the 2026-2027 school year, our word is JOY.
In the midst of our busy lives, it can be easy to overlook the joy that surrounds us every day. This year, we are committed to helping our students recognize and celebrate those moments, both big and small. Joy may come from learning to write a name independently, mastering a new reading skill, solving a challenging multi-step math problem, or showing kindness to a friend.
We are also encouraging students to "unplug" and embrace opportunities to think, create, struggle, and grow. It is okay to be bored sometimes, to work through challenges, and to engage in meaningful face-to-face conversations about our day, the books we read, and the strategies we use to solve problems. These experiences help build resilience, confidence, and strong social connections.
While academic growth remains a top priority, we also place great value on developing social skills, celebrating accomplishments, and supporting one another. Our expectations are high because we believe in every child's potential. Most importantly, we are committed to helping your child succeed academically, socially, and emotionally throughout the year.
Throughout the school year, Ms. Tucker and I will send special education newsletters each nine-week grading period. Prior to your child's Annual ARD meeting, we will contact you to discuss your child's progress, review goals and accommodations, and answer any questions you may have. We will also send home a parent questionnaire. Your feedback is invaluable and helps us better understand and support your child's unique academic and social needs.
Thank you for partnering with us in your child's education. We appreciate your support, trust, and communication as we work together to help every student grow academically, socially, and emotionally. We look forward to a joyful and successful school year!
With gratitude,
Ms. Burks and Ms. Tucker
