My name is Ms. Harrison and this is my fifth year as the campus ESL Facilitator and 21st year as a teacher. I want you, the parents/guardians of my students, to know that we are a TEAM and I am here to help in any way I can. Mi nombre es Sra. Harrison y este es mi quinto año como facilitadora de ESL del campus y 21° año como maestra. Linguistic support will look different than what I do at school but we can keep it simple and FUN! Below are some suggestions but you can modify them to fit your student.
If your student has any writing or reading work you can "chunk the assignment". Give your student sections or pieces to do at a time and allow them extra time if they need it.
Use blank organizers or idea webs to help them organize their writing.
You can help them with reading and writing by brainstorming out loud. I love to hear their ideas and thoughts before I have them write or answer questions because I can see their thought process and help guide them if they are confused by a concept.
Simply talking with them will also help with fluency and pronunciation as well as their listening skills.
Model pronunciation for them or clarify a term/phrase.
Vocabulary is always more fun with visuals or even physical activity! Show pictures to accompany words or go outside and throw a ball around. I have played Vocab Toss with my students over the years and they always enjoy it! Work on academic vocabulary (words specific to math, science, etc) as well as social vocabulary.
