Counseling Advisory Council
The Hanna Springs Counseling Advisory Council (CAC) commitee met three times during the 23-24 school year to discuss campus climate, data from Counselor needs assessments, and student referral trends to enable the Comprehensive Scool Counseling Program (CSCP) to be fulfilled with purposeful direction. The CAC was crucial in reinforcing the needs for the CSCP since this was Mrs. Brown's first year on campus and starting the program from the ground up.
2023-2024 Counciling Advisory Committee: Carisa Brown (Counselor), Lindsay Duhon (Principal), Shaye Evans (PK-2 Teacher), Kelly Champeau (3-5 Teacher), Courtney Carnley (Parent), David Stone (Community Member) and members of our student leadership group, including Chase Posey (5th grade student), Harper Guthrie (4th grade student), and Kimber Gonzales (3rd grade student).
*if a member was not available for the meeting a substitute was attempted, and if they were absent Mrs. Brown met with the member individually at a later time.
Example of Using the Implementation Cycle:
In September of 2023, Mrs. Brown called her first meeting for the Hanna Springs Counseling Advisory Committee (CAC) to create a yearlong plan that followed the Texas Model for a Comprehensive School Counseling Program (CSCP). see below
Example of the completed Implementation Cycle for a Specific Issue:
Organizing
To organize the yearlong program the CAC began with reviewing data from a comprehensive needs assessment that was given in August of 2023, Beginning Of Year (BOY) Data. When discussing the data it was determined that the campus needed a solid base of foundational systems that would allow for long term benefits for all students, that could be built on by all members of the Hanna Family.
Planning
The CAC reviewed the BOY data and determined the key points of focus for the CSCP. It was then determined at the next meeting updated data would be reviewed and plans adjusted accordingly, Middle Of Year (MOY) Data.
Designing
Mrs. Brown shared the main components of the Texas Model for Comprehensive School Counseling to the committee to gauge the complexity of what the CSCP would need to entail, including school wide initiatives. The initiatives included the Zones of Regulation, Settle Your Glitter, Peace Path, and Don’t Flip Your Lid. Members of the committee were excited to see the base that was being set for the CSCP, and the Hanna Family as a whole.
Implementing
Lessons were designed and implemented by Mrs. Brown to follow the immediate needs of the campus and were taught to all homeroom classes, PK-5th. Opportunities for data collection were given to show the student knowledge base and growth opportunities. The data collected included class surveys, student check-ins, and exit tickets. Teachers were provided with resources that allowed for continuation of the skills and lessons within their daily activities.
Evaluating
The results of the lessons' data were reviewed alongside the needs assessments with the CAC to determine that students were showing progress. Committee conversations determined student needs were showing growth within the guidelines of the CSCP and a school wide commonality was building a strong base.
Annual program plan
From day one of the 2023-2024 school year, Mrs. Brown has guided all actions of the Hanna Springs Counseling Program from the data received from the administrators, students, staff and parents. The program encompasses said data within the TEKS set forth by the Texas Education Agency and the guidance from the Texas Model for a Comprehensive School Counseling Program (CSCP).
The daily actions of the CSCP are broken down into the four components of the Texas Model: Individual Planning, Guidance Curriculum, Responsive Services, and System Support, along with any non-counseling duties. Mrs. Brown documents the times utilized within these components to evaluate where the efforts of the program are utilized. The analysis of time, along with other program data, is crucial for pursuing growth within the parameters of the program and needs of the students. This data driven, student-centered program will allow the program to continue to thrive through the support of the stakeholders and the Hanna family as a whole.
