Navigli & Darsena

Why Choose This Tour

Have a look at the channels and harbour of Milan, which were the heart of the city's economy for a long time and which were used for the transportation of the marble which was needed in order to build the Duomo Cathedral. Today it is still considered one of the most loved sites of the city, where people like to spend their free time.

When you think of Milan, it's very likely that you will end up thinking about its majestic cathedral, the Duomo. But have you ever wondered how we managed to build such a huge and imponent building? Well, it's complicated. We built our own channel to help the necessary material reach the city. It may seem counterproductive, but the Navigli channel system was one of the best engineering projects of ancient times, and Leonardo Da Vinci was also involved in the project. Thanks to the Navigli, which once covered the whole city, Milan managed to become one of the most important commercial checkpoints in the country, and it was also possible to find an easier way to build the cathedral, that is to say thanks to beautiful yet heavy blocks of marble, which where transported directly from Piedmont to Milan.
