Computer Applications

Students will develop technical skills and increase productivity while learning how to be proficient, productive and safe users of technology, benefitting them throughout high school and when they enter the workforce and/or continue their education. Students will learn Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel, the software used by businesses and colleges. Emphasis is placed on encouraging students to apply the skills they’ve learned with real-world applications, including creating professional emails, reports, business letters, presentations, spreadsheets, brochures and newsletters. Students will also learn techniques for integrating animation effects, basic photo-editing, document design and formatting along with improving keyboarding skills.
Digital Media
6385 1 Semester – ½ Credit 1 period per day

Develop advanced technology skills and become an adept user of Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator software. In this hands-on introduction to digital design, students will learn how to create, edit and restore pictures, arrange design elements and create visually appealing designs for business applications, print media, video games and websites. Lessons are easy to follow and created with the beginner in mind. Students will maintain a digital portfolio of their work during the semester. This class is appropriate for students interested in learning more about college and career opportunities in animation, application development, engineering, graphic design, illustration, multimedia communication, photography, computer game design and web design.
Intro to Programming

Students are introduced to the dynamic field of computer coding in a course designed for the beginning coder. With a unique focus on creativity, problem solving and project-based learning, students will create and design websites, computer animations, graphics and games in a hands-on learning environment using state-of-the-art design tools. Applying their own ideas and creativity to develop an interest in computers, students will enrich critical thinking and problem solving skills. Programming projects will focus on research, design and collaboration. Through partnerships with local colleges and businesses, students will explore college and career opportunities in Computer and Information Technology. Learning to read, write and code is a recognized 21st century skill. This course also serves as a pathway course for students interested in learning more about computer-based design in the Cisco Networking, Media Art & Design and Electronic Engineering West Shore Career-Tech programs and the AP Computer Science Principles course.
Tech Trends

All future jobs will require an understanding of technology. In this course, students will explore past, current and emerging technologies including artificial intelligence, basic web design, computer hardware and software, data networks, social media and robotics. Students will also learn what it means to be a digital citizen while investigating topics related to computers and society. Projects will focus on human-computer interaction, real-world applications and developing technologies. Through these activities, students will learn which of these areas might interest them for future course selections at Lakewood High School including West Shore Career-Tech programs along with possible career choices.
Entrepreneurship
6250 1 Semester – ½ Credit 1 period per day

How do you turn an idea into a business? Entrepreneurship will teach the skills and approaches to successfully evaluate and create new business opportunities using design thinking, the business canvas model and lean startup methodology. Students will engage in team building and collaborative activities, with the intent of increasing career and college readiness. This project-based learning course utilizes the Jacobson Institute for Youth Entrepreneurship BizInnovator Startup curriculum. Students will have the chance to interact with local entrepreneurs and be given the opportunity to research, develop and pitch their own business ideas. Upon completing this course, students will have an option to earn three college credits through the University of Iowa.
Financial Literacy
6270 1 Semester – ½ Credit 1 period per day

Do you want to learn how to better manage your money? Have you always wondered how the stock market works? This semester long course teaches the fundamentals of financial management following the nationally recognized Next Gen Personal Finance curriculum including: banking, credit, taxes, investing, retirement planning and insurance. Understanding the connection between career choices, goal setting and future income/earning potential empowers students to make informed decisions that lead to financial independence. Students actively participate in project-based activities to demonstrate the importance of these concepts in meeting personal financial goals. Practical applications such as writing checks, calculating interest, preparing a budget, buying/leasing a car, renting an apartment and purchasing a home are also included. Lakewood High School has been recognized by the Next Gen Personal Finance as a Gold Standard school in financial education. This course meets Ohio’s new financial literacy graduation requirement starting with the Class of 2026.
