Water Quality Monitoring
Water Quality Monitoring
LBCC Volunteers have been participating in the Citizens Statewide Lake Assessment Program (CSLAP) collecting long term data at Lake Bonaparte since 1988. The data collected helps the LBCC to assess changes and trends in water quality to help everyone keep Lake Bonaparte healthy for generations to come. CSLAP is one of the longest running, continuous programs of its kind in the nation. It is a collaborative effort administered by the NYS DEC and NYSFOLA (New York State Federation of Lake Associations). Learn more
Eurasian Watermilfoil Control Efforts
Since the mid-2000's the LBCC has been leading the fight against the invasion of Eurasian Watermilfoil (EWM) at Lake Bonaparte. Biological controls are proving to be a valuable tool for long term EWM reduction. Since adding additional weevils (Euhrychiopsis lecontei) known to prefer EWM as their food source, a significant reduction in the milfoil is evident. Other biological control agents also found in Lake Bonaparte include the weevil, Euhrychiopsis lecontei; the moth, Acentria ephemerella; the midge Cricotopus myriophylli; the caddis, Nectopsyche albida, and the caddis species, Setodes sp. (small caddis).
Working most recently with Rooney Aquatics and Robert Carlson during the 2025 monitoring season, we have confirmation that biological control agents continue to be present, and that relatively high EWM stem and leaf damage is evident.
A brief summary of recommendations from Rooney Aquatics based on 2025 monitoring include:
Fish for panfish and remove your catch as these species eat the helpful weevils.
Carefully monitor the spread of Variable-leaf watermilfoil as it appears to be increasing lake-wide
Propellers should be checked for all plants after each use. Any Eurasian or variable-leaf watermilfoil should be removed and put onshore to dry. This may help prevent any new patches of watermilfoil from becoming established around the docks. Likewise property owners are encouraged to remove any fragmented plants that blow into shore.
Nuisance plants near docks can be controlled using black benthic mats, a Cutter ‘N’ Rake, and/or hand pulling
