Membership polls have prompted LBCC's continued involvement in Mosquito control. Information follows regarding spraying. Dunks are widely available (Hardware stores, Amazon, etc.) and provide an additional avenue of control for visitors to use personally. Tackling insect control using multiple approaches (integrated pest management) boosts effectiveness. We can all help by limiting standing water (in boats, buckets, and clogged gutters) at the lake.
The American Mosquito Control Association endorses "Dunks" for integrated pest management because of their safety profile and their effectiveness.
Mosquito dunks are a highly effective, community-wide tool for lake associations because they contain Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (Bti). This naturally occurring bacteria exclusively targets mosquito and blackfly larvae without harming fish, frogs, birds, pets, or beneficial pollinators. [1, 2, 3]
Consider:
Dropping dunks directly into stagnant rain barrels or isolated pools of water. Each dunk treats up to 100 square feet and remains active for about a month.
Building neighborhood "Dunk bucket" mosquito traps to reduce the biting population. Fill a 2-5 gallon dark bucket with water and grass clippings, along with a quarter of a mosquito dunk. This is an ideal breeding ground that attracts egg-laying mosquitoes, and then kills the larvae before they hatch.
Aerial Spraying
Duflo Spraying has been contracted to spray 2-3 times when mosquito populations are deemed to be especially high.
Kontrol 30-30 will be the material used to spray and it is not a concentrate. The when spraying they will apply .36 ounces of Kontrol and 1.08 ounces of carrier for a 1:3 ratio and 1.44 ounce of total solution per acre. This low concentration application is targeted to control the mosquitos and not affect other insects such as houseflies, or bees. The vendor, spray and concentration are the same as contracted by the New York State Department of Health for their mosquito and virus control spraying over various cities and counties across the state.
We’ve been informed that there is no harm in being outside while they are spraying. The vendor has extensive experience and expertise routinely spraying over cities, villages, and other lakes.
Some of the conditions required for the application to occur safely and effectively are:
• Winds less than 10 mph at heights to 500 feet.
• No rain at the time of the application and for at least 6-8 hours following.
• Temperatures at the time of the application are 70 degrees or higher.
• The plane and application systems must be in proper working order
How does the application work:
• The application is designed to control small flying biting insects in a determined geography.
• Adulticide product is released into the air in very tiny droplets
• The droplets stay suspended in the air and in the treatment target area for 5-6 hours.
• Flying insects that are actively flying in the treated area will be exposed to the droplets
• The product is labeled and dosed for mosquito sized flying insects
