Options for New Attendance Boundaries

Staff evaluated seven options and presented them to the School Board for consideration. At the Feb. 24, 2020, School Board meeting, the Superintendent recommended the district move forward with presentation of Option 6A to the public. Then, after the June 1 workshop, the decision was made to move forward with Option 6A for adoption.

The School Board will consider Option 6A for tentative approval its June 22 meeting and final approval on Aug. 10. Public input is welcome at both meetings. Additionally, public input can be emailed to redistricting@lake.k12.fl.us and voice messages can be left at 352-253-6693.

Option 6A*

*The School Board will consider Option 6A for tentative approval on June 22 and final approval on Aug. 10.

Superintendent Diane Kornegay recommended on Feb. 24, 2020, that the district move forward with this option for presentation to the public at the Public Input Meetings held in March, and the School Board unanimously accepted her recommendation. In June, the decision was made to move forward with Option 6A for adoption.
Option 6A is a slight variation on Option 6. The only difference is that Option 6A shows a portion of the Hills of Minneola, a subdivision under construction, with a primary zone of Minneola Charter for elementary students instead of Astatula Elementary, as is shown in Option 6.
There is no change at the middle school level.
No enrolled students currently live in this area.

Option 6

This option is not a primary focus of the School Board.

Student populations generally balance well, although slight underpopulation at East Ridge Middle in favor of Cecil E. Gray Middle. There is accommodation at many schools for future growth
Zones are more natural, compact and contiguous
May overpopulate Aurelia Cole Academy at the middle school level, although additional grades at charter schools may alleviate this
Does not relieve Windy Hill Middle as much as desired
Population for Sawgrass Bay Elementary is low initially, but will increase as Wellness Way develops
Adds some uncertainty, as there is a large amount of school choice (to charters and other district schools) being exercised in the area around Lake Minnehaha currently zoned for Clermont Elementary and Clermont Middle. If those students find Lost Lake Elementary and East Ridge Middle attractive options and decide to enroll there, it could impact those schools more than currently
The redistricting will not impact the enrollment of any student currently attending charter schools or any student who wants to apply to attend a charter school.

Option 5

This option is not a primary focus of the School Board.

Student populations balance well, with accommodation at many schools for future growth
May overpopulate Aurelia Cole Academy at the middle school level, although additional grades at charter schools may alleviate this
Creates awkward zones for East Ridge Middle and Minneola Charter
Does not relieve Windy Hill Middle as much as desired
Population for Sawgrass Bay Elementary is low initially, but will increase as Wellness Way develops
The redistricting will not impact the enrollment of any student currently attending charter schools or any student who wants to apply to attend a charter school.

Option 4

This option is not a primary focus of the School Board.

Partially addresses issue with secondary zone for Minneola Charter
Better addresses future growth in the Minneola area than Options 1 or 2
Better utilizes capacity at Aurelia Cole Academy and Astatula Elementary
Relieves growth pressures at Grassy Lake Elementary
Creates situation where the Montverde area would be rezoned again when the Minneola Area Relief School is built (within 5 years)
May overpopulate Aurelia Cole Academy at the middle school level, although additional grades at charter schools may alleviate this
Creates awkward zone for East Ridge Middle
Does not relieve Windy Hill Middle as much as desired
The redistricting will not impact the enrollment of any student currently attending charter schools or any student who wants to apply to attend a charter school.

Option 3

This option is not a primary focus of the School Board.

Partially addresses issue with secondary zone for Minneola Charter
Better addresses future growth in the Minneola area than Options 1 or 2
Better utilizes capacity at Aurelia Cole Academy
Overpopulates Pine Ridge Elementary
May overpopulate Aurelia Cole Academy at the middle school level, although additional grades at charter schools may alleviate this
Underpopulates East Ridge Middle and because of Aurelia Cole Academy boundary, it is difficult to pull more areas into the East Ridge Middle zone.
Does not relieve Windy Hill Middle as much as desired
The redistricting will not impact the enrollment of any student currently attending charter schools or any student who wants to apply to attend a charter school.

Option 2

This option is not a primary focus of the School Board.

Minimizes impact on current Clermont Elementary, Grassy Lake Elementary, Minneola Charter and Groveland Elementary populations.
Only partially accounts for growth
Underpopulates Aurelia Cole Academy, which is in a built-out, low-growth area where the population will not naturally increase
Underpopulates Four Corners K-8
Overpopulates Cecil E. Gray Middle and Windy Hill Middle
The redistricting will not impact the enrollment of any student currently attending charter schools or any student who wants to apply to attend a charter school.

Option 1

This option is not a primary focus of the School Board.

Minimizes impact on current Clermont Elementary, Grassy Lake Elementary, Minneola Charter, and Groveland Elementary populations.
Maximizes “District Student” population at all schools as much as possible
Does not account for growth
Would result in another boundary shift for the Sawgrass Bay Elementary/Lost Lake Elementary area soon, given growth in Four Corners and Wellness Way areas
Overpopulates Cecil E. Gray Middle School
The redistricting will not impact the enrollment of any student currently attending charter schools or any student who wants to apply to attend a charter school.
