October 2020,
Dear P.S. 54 Families,
Welcome to the 2020 - 2021 school year! I am beyond thrilled to welcome you back to in person learning at P.S. 54. It was so great to hear the sounds of student voices once again as I walked the halls of the school last week. I would like to give a huge shout out to the outstanding staff and amazing parents who helped to make it a smooth transition for our students during the reopening of school.
Mrs. LaRosa, Mrs. Titolo and myself have been working hard all summer to plan for a safe opening of school. All of our classrooms have been set up to increase social distancing. Signage has been installed throughout the building to guide students and staff through the halls. There are also signs placed around the building to remind the students about the importance of hand washing, maintaining social distancing and wearing a mask. As the students transition back to being in school, P.S. 54 will be placing a stronger emphasis on social emotional learning in all of our Pre-K to 5 classrooms. The students will be given the opportunity to discuss their feeling about what has happened since March. Any child expressing difficulties or anxiety may be offered help to get them through these trying times.
In accordance with the DOE Reopening Plan, everyone who enters the building MUST have a Health Screening. (Mrs. LaRosa and myself included!) This consists of answering the following 4 "Yes or No" questions:
Are you exhibiting signs of COVID-19 (cough, fever, loss of taste, shortness of breath)
In the last 10 days have you tested positive for COVID-19?
To the best of your knowledge, have you been in close contact with someone who has tested positive for COVID-19 or exhibited symptoms in the last 14 days?
Have you traveled internationally or to a state on the New York Travel Advisory list in the last 14 days?
You can do this with paper and pencil or by using an app on your phone. Students will be subject to random temperature checks as well. Mrs. Bonadonna has created a child friendly Health Screening for our younger students who cannot read.
Please continue to check your child's Google Classroom as well as our web page for announcements.
We will also post any announcements on P.S. 54's Twitter page @Ladybug548.
P.S. 54 will remain a feeding site any of our students who are working at home remotely and is in need of breakfast or lunch. Food will be available between 7:30 am and 1:30. There is no cost for this service. Adult meals have been moved to Susan Wagner HS located on Manor Road between 3:00 - 5:00 Monday - Friday.
If you need to reach Mrs. LaRosa, Mrs. Titolo or myself, please do not hesitate to send an email anytime or call the school at 718 - 698 - 0600 between 7:00am - 3:00pm Monday - Friday.
Sincerely,
Ms. Barbara Kenney
