Visual Arts Classic is a competition which engages High School students in creative problem solving within their chosen studio area. Each year a theme is selected along with twelve artists and /or cultures for the students to study in-depth. VAC offers eleven studio categories for students to choose from including: Drawing, Painting, Printmaking, Ceramics, Sculpture, Art History, Digital Art/ Graphic Design, Digital/Traditional Photography, Personal Adornment, Fibers and Mixed Media.
This year’s theme is “The Art of Color”. Students are provided with a Long-term prompt that they solve prior to the Regional competition. They compose an artist statement that explains the aesthetic choices made in their Long-term project as well as a connection to the artists they studied. Students are provided with a list of materials to bring in order to compete in the Onsite studio project at the Regional.
Students also participate in two team competitions, an Art History Quiz Bowl that is centered on the year’s artists and cultures and a Critical Thinking team group project related to the theme and artists. Students receiving first place on either their individual Long-term or Onsite project will proceed onto VAC State competition in Madison. Teams earning 1st place in the Quiz Bowl, or the teams with the highest number of points overall at each Regional will advance onto state to compete as a team.
All team members who earn a first place on their onsite project and/ or long-term project in their individual studio art categories will be advancing to the VAC state competition in Madison on Monday, March 25th.
